Question:
I am looking to install a hitch on my 17 Forester to carry approximately 100 pounds of bikes plus a 25 pound carrier. I would like the option of being able to attach a small trailer. I am trying to decide whether to get a 1 1/4inch or 2inch hitch. The Forester is rated at 1,500 pounds towing capacity. It would seem that a class 2 hitch is appropriate. For legal reasons I do not want to exceed the 1,500 pound TC even if the same Forester is rated at a higher TC in other countries and probably could handle more with brakes. The carrier I have chosen comes in 1 1/4inch and 2inch models. Is one hitch size better than the other?

Overall I prefer to recommend 2 inch hitches whenever available as they have better capacities and also have more accessories made for them. I really like the Curt Hitch # CU64FR for your 2017 Subaru Forester as it has the 2 inch opening and also is mostly hidden which allows a cleaner look and better ground clearance.
Then for trailer wiring the Tekonsha part # 118467 is the easiest to install and has most reliable converter box.
