Does Tire Weight Rating Double Since the Same Tire Will be on Both Sides of the Axle

Question:
I have a single axle trailer with Castlerock ST225/75R15 tires. Looks like 2540# is the max load on the tires. Since I have two tires is the maximum trailer load double this or 5080#?

Expert Reply:
Yes, for a single axle trailer you will add the weight rating of both tires for your total tire weight rating. So for the Load Range D Castle Rock ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # 274-000029 you will take the individual rating of 2,540 lbs at 65 psi and that increases to 5,080 lbs.
Please note that you are always limited by your lowest rated component. So if you have a 3,500 lb axle then you're still limited to 3,500 lbs even though these tires are rated for 5,080 lbs together.
