Question:
Hi, I have a Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller from a previous vehicle, and trying to install it into a 2014 VW Touareg that has factory tow harness wired. I understand from your great technical posts that I need a 7-PIN mating connector to replace the OEM cap, and also need the 4-PIN VW connector to adapt to the brake controller. My confusion is that there is contradicting information on whether I need to add a relay between the OEM under dash tow connector and PIN 3 of the brake controller?? The video posted shows the Prodigy being installed on the Touareg, presumably without relay. But the Technical Bulletin 2005-Present Touareg states relay is highly encouraged.

I'll start out by addressing where the confusion comes from- because the Tekonsha Prodigy RF # TK94FR gives off a radio frequency signal to the brakes, it does not require the relay that is required when installing other brake controllers. In order to install the Tekonsha Primus IQ # TK90160 you will need to install a normally open 12v relay, which can be sourced locally, on the brake lamp signal of the adapter wire you use on your 2014 VW Touareg.
If you don't have the towing package on your 2014 VW Touareg you will need some additional parts. To start you'll need to install a 4 way connector using the Tekonsha # 118668, which installs easily by teeing into the plugs behind your vehicle's tail lights. From there, you'll need to add a 7 way connector using the # ETBC7 which will utilize the 4 way you're installing and provide the additional circuits needed for a 7 way connector. If you already have the factory towing package plug but no 7 way connector, you can use the Hopkins # HM40975 to provide you with a plug that is capable of accepting a trailer's 7 way plug.
I've linked the tech bulletin you mentioned in case you need to locate it easily, as well as the installation videos of the wiring harnesses to refer back to.
