I like how you were trying to test it Keith, I might have done the same thing if I wouldn't have sat through the Weigh Safe training. The built-in scale on the Weigh Safe hitch is designed to measure tongue weight, the downward force from your trailer’s coupler when it’s hooked up. When someone stands on the hitch ball, the pressure isn’t applied the same way a trailer tongue presses down. That difference makes the gauge read incorrectly, which is why it may have shown 400 lbs instead of your actual weight. For an accurate reading, you’ll want to connect your trailer, latch the coupler, and raise the jack. That’s when the scale gives you the true tongue weight you can rely on.

That's pretty common, Keith. Knowing your exact tongue weight gives you the opportunity to redistribute your cargo so you can achieve a perfect 10-15% tongue weight.
