Wiring Needed To Flat Tow 2017 Chevy Spark

Updated 03/04/2020 | Published 03/02/2020

Question:

I guess Im missing something. Ive watched the wiring and base plate videos. Where and how does the tow vehicle wires attach to the sparks wiring harness and how does the break away brake system work? Thanks for any assistance.

The towing wiring harness 4-Pole Flat part # 118694 for the 2017 Chevy Spark is different than the wiring needed for the tow bar to flat tow the vehicle. There is not a plug and play option for tow bar wiring on the Chevy Spark. I recommend to use the Roadmaster Tail Light Wiring Kit with Bulbs part # RM-155 which will give you a 6-way plug on the front of the vehicle and an additional bulb in the tail lights so you are not splicing in the vehicle's wiring. You will be bypassing the vehicle's wiring with this option. I have attached an installation video for your reference.

When you flat tow a vehicle, you will need a supplemental braking system to activate the brakes when the motor home's brakes are activated. These systems do come with a break away switch for in the unfortunate event your vehicle breaks away from the trailer, the supplemental braking system will activate the Chevy's brakes so you can catch your vehicle.

The best supplemental braking system available is the Demco SBS Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System part # SM99251 which uses a small actuating cylinder to depress the vehicle's brake pedal so you can still drive the vehicle when it's not being flat towed compared to the other systems that require you to remove the bulky brake box from the floorboard to drive the car.

The Demco SBS Stay-IN-Play Duo does come with the breakaway switch and it will be wired to the main operating unit of the system and the 12V battery of your vehicle. I have attached an installation video and diagram for your reference.

If your motor home happens to have air brakes, you will need part # SM99243 instead.
