Can the Same Hub and Drum Assembly be Used for Hydraulic and Electric Drum Brakes

18 foot flat bed trailer with hydraulic brakes. If I add electric brakes, can I use the current brake drum ?

Yes you can. The brakes have to be changed out because they receive the "power" different ways, but since the hub and drum assembly only does one job you can use the same one. Just be sure that your electric brakes match the same size as your hydraulic brakes. For example, the hydraulic brakes # AKFBBRK-35 measure 10 " x 2-1/4" so a comparable electric brake option is the kit # AKEBRK-35-SA.
I have attached a helpful article about adding electric drum brakes to a trailer that you can use as a reference. Basically you just need to route 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1 from the brakes, through a breakaway kit like # 20099, to the 7-Way on your trailer. If you don't have a 7-Way then I recommend a junction box kit like part # HS381-9000.
You also need a brake controller in your tow vehicle as well. If you don't already have one just let me know the year/make/model of your tow vehicle and I can make a recommendation for you!
