Is Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch Needed for 2018 Nissan Titan XD Short Bed With Factory Puck System

Updated 07/11/2019 | Published 07/10/2019

Question:

I am interested in buying the Curt Q-20 for my 2018 Nissan Titan XD with a 78 in bed. My question is whether I can complete a 90 degree turn with the hitch using the factory puck system or will I need an additional pin box or slider? Thanks for your help!

There are options for your 2018 Nissan Titan XD, though in order to make a sharp turn you will either need a sliding hitch, or a fixed 5th wheel hitch with a Sidewinder. One that is compatible with a Sidewinder is the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C16540-16026.

For a sliding hitch on your short bed 2018 Titan XD there is an outstanding option, the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider # DM8550034 (18,000 lbs) or # DM8550035 (21,000 lbs); both of these hitches would need the Demco 5th Wheel Rail Adapter for Nissan Titan XD OEM 5th Wheel Towing Prep Package # DM6200.

What makes the Demco so fantastic is that it slides automatically when turning, so you will never need to get out of your truck just to make a turn like you would with a manual sliding hitch. The Hijacker also has a highly secure jaw system which ensures a complete, secure connection to your trailer's king pin as well as its cushioned head which will give you a smoother, quieter, and more pleasant ride while towing. I have added links to video reviews of the hitches for you to check out.

In regards to a Sidewinder, to find the correct replacement for your 5th wheel's pin box you will need to know is the manufacturer and model number of the pin box on your fifth wheel and match that with the correct replacement. For example, Sidewinder # RP34FR will replace Lippert 0719, 1621 and 1621HD, as well as Fabex PB 600 Series (68200) pin boxes. If you let me know the manufacturer and model number of your pin box I can find the correct Sidewinder for you.

In regards to turning clearance, there is also a formula you can use in order to determine if a Sidewinder or sliding hitch will allow you to perform a 90 degree turn. You first need to measure the distance from the center of your fifth wheel hitch jaw to your truck's cab. You will also need to know the width of your trailer. You can then use this formula to find out if you can do a 90 degree turn:

(A + B) - C = Clearance
A = Distance from center of 5th-wheel hitch jaw to truck cab in inches
B = Length of Sidewinder arm in inches (22) OR amount of travel of sliding hitch (14 for the Hijacker)
C = Width of trailer in inches divided by 2

I have added a link to our entire selection of Sidewinders for you to take a look at as well as a help article on Sidewinders you may find useful.
