Raising the Height of a 2019 Forest River Viking 17BH Travel Trailer for Driveway Clearance

Updated 06/18/2019 | Published 06/17/2019

Question:

I just bought a 2019 Forest River Viking 17BH single axle travel trailer that bottoms out when backing up my inclined driveway. Im hoping the Sumo Springs trailer helper springs will give me the couple of additional inches clearance that will make my life less stressful when backing my trailer in at home. The space between the top surface of the underslung leaf spring to the bottom of the frame behind the axle is about 5 and 1/2 inches. I see the spring is only four inches tall. With the addition of the bottom mounting bracket and possibly one or more spacers will these helper springs be able to achieve the required 1/4 to 1/2 inch static load compression when installed on my trailer? Also, If I wanted to obtain a little more clearance under the rear of the trailer can I add more spacers without affecting the performance of the helper spring or the stability of the trailer? Thank you. If this works or you can recommend another alternative, it will be much appreciated! It took me 45 minutes, a few gouges in the driveway asphalt and a good deal of colorful language to get my trailer up the driveway after my first trip.

Without any spacers at all the SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs # TSS-106-40 actually sit 7-1/2" tall so there will need to be a significant amount of compression for your suspension to sit properly.

I do have a better solution for the problem you are running into with your 2019 Forest River Viking 17BH. I recommend using the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00 which changes your leaf spring suspension to overslung so that your leaf springs sit on top of your axle. This raises the height of your trailer the equivalent to the diameter of your axle (2-3/8") plus the height of your leaf spring stack. Since you are thinking you only need a few inches for proper clearance this kit gives you more than enough extra height to park your trailer in your driveway.
