Question:
On my trailer that has from what I can tell a #84 spindle, can I convert it to an oil bath system and still use the existing bearings? It has L44649 / L68149 bearings in it.

The # L44649 and # L68149 bearings that you mentioned do indicate that you have a #84 spindle. The potential issue with converting grease hubs to oil bath is the grease cap, as oil bath hubs use a grease cap that actually threads onto the ends of the hub. Most grease hubs aren't threaded so many times an entirely new hub is needed to make this conversion.
If however your 3,500 pound hubs feature a 1.98" hub bore diameter then you can use the Kodiak XL ProLube Kit # XLPROLUBE1980KIT. This kit includes everything needed to make this conversion without actually swapping out the hubs or your existing bearings. The cap bodies will push into the hub bore and feature threaded ends to which the actual caps will attach.
I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.
