Recommended Trailer Hitch for a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500
Updated 03/10/2019 | Published 03/09/2019 >
Question:
I only have a bumper mounted ball which I know is not good from a rating and height point of view. My question is what hitch shall I buy? A frame mounted receiver with a 2” or a 2.5” mount? a Class IV or a class V?

According to the owner's manual for your 2005 Dodge Ram 1500, if you will be towing more than 5,000 lbs but not more than 12,000 lbs then you will need to use a class IV trailer hitch with a 2" receiver tube opening. For this, I recommend the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 41929 which has a maximum gross trailer weight rating of 12,000 lbs.
The Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver is a custom fit for your Ram and it has a lifetime warranty. It also comes with a durable black powder coating so you should not have any issues with rust. I have attached a photo that shows what it could look like while installed.
Please note that although the hitch my be rated up to 12,000 lbs, the vehicle is likely rated for less weight so that will be your limiting factor.
