Yes I have a 2003 Dodge Ram Crew 6-foot bed trying to put in the rails for a fifth wheel hookup what is the distance from the edge of the tailgate to the first rail

The dimension you are looking for is 26-5/16 inches when installing the Reese Universal Rail kit part # RP30035-023. This is the recommended distance Reese recommends between the rear rail edge of the kit and the rear edge of your truck's bed. You'll then use the front legs of your fifth wheel hitch to place the front rail.

We have actually heard from Lippert about this type of issue and they recommend replacing the 6 amp fuse with a 30 amp fuse. This should resolve the issues you're describing.
