Question:

Anybody got any help to offer in hooking up tow lights capabilities to the mini. Id really like to make my car lights in the rear operate from the plug in to the RV break lights and turns. Anybody done this or know how on a 2008 Mini Convertible non S.

For activating the tail lights of your 2008 Mini Cooper with your RV while the Mini is being flat-towed you will want to check out the FAQs I attached that detail how this is done. The process and installation will be the exact same as what you would need to do to install a diode kit on your vehicle.

Basically, you will use a set of diodes installed in your vehicle to operate the tail lights of you vehicle with the tow bar wiring from your RV. This will not affect the functioning of your tail lights when the vehicle is not being towed either.

The Roadmaster EZ Base Plate Kit # 521876-1 is the correct base plate kit for your vehicle. Next, you will need a tow bar.

When choosing a tow bar, you will need one that is compatible with EZ base plates. I recommend the Roadmaster Stowmaster Tow Bar, # RM-501. I have included a link to the installation details and a link to a video review for you to view.

You will also need safety cables. I recommend Roadmaster Safety Cables, # RM-643. These are coiled so they will not drag on the ground. If you use the Sterling tow bar, it comes with safety cables.

And finally, most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being towed. The easiest to install and use is the Roadmaster Even Brake Portable Proportional Braking System, # RM-9400. This unit activates the brakes on the vehicle being towed in proportion to how much the RV is braking. This is the safest type of braking action and it reduces wear and tear on the RV and towed vehicle brakes.

You will also want to check the vehicle owners manual for additional information on flat towing the vehicle. Some vehicles require an axle disconnect, drive line disconnect, transmission lube pump, or free wheeling hubs in order to be flat towed.
