Question:
The manufacturer’s website states that this coupler provides the only automatic and continuously tight ball fit in the industry. What is different about this coupler than others in the industry? Also, can this coupler be bolted on by drilling holes to match existing holes?

Expert Reply:
Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler # BD028287 and similar couplers have a sleeve that constantly puts pressure on the front of the coupler, the part that goes around the ball, so that it cannot come loose. There is also more surface area of the coupler making contact with the ball.
Traditional couplers use what is essentially a wedge. The fit is predetermined and can me manually adjusted on some couplers by tightening or loosening a bolt or nut in the wedge/latch mechanism. This design can get loose over time plus prolonged use can wear out the wedge. You would not have that problem with a Collar-Lok coupler.
This coupler was meant to be welded on but it can be possible to bolt it on. Doing so could void the warranty so keep that in mind. What you could do instead is use Demco 50-Degree A-Frame Coupler without Jack Hole # DM15349-52 and then add Bulldog Collar-Lok Adjustable Channel Mount Coupler # BD028657 for a bolt-on set up. The coupler in this set up takes a 2-5/16 inch ball.
