Can There Be a Gap Between Channel Mount Couplers and The Mount They Install on

Question:

My company has a trailer that weights about 10,000lbs and using this type of coupler on an adjustable channel. I believe the setup is incorrect as there is a gap of about a 1/4inch on each side and the same at the rear of the coupler. The bolts are tight but the coupler can easily be rattled by hand because there is so much play. Should shim washers be used to take up the side play? the trailer bangs loud when slowing down....thx for your advise

I had a similar question as this and spoke to Bulldog and they said that the capacity for their couplers like the part # BD028657 that you referenced can only be guaranteed if the mounting bracket is tight against a channel. If there is a gap you will not get the full capacity.

You would want to get some washers or shims so that the coupler can be installed properly and have all of the play taken out.
