Question:

How would you go about weighing a tailgate to ensure you get the correct tailgate lift assist assembly? Also, is it necessary to have them on both sides of the tailgate?

The easiest method to weighing your trailer's tailgate would be to use a hanging scale with the appropriate capacity as they are both inexpensive and easy to find.

That would allow you to know whether or not you need the 200 lb capacity Rack'Em Double Barrel Utility Trailer Tailgate Lift Assist # RA-27C, which you would only need one of, or the 300 lb capacity Gorilla-Lift Utility Trailer Tailgate Lift Assist # GL1, which would require use on both sides of the tailgate.
