Question:
How do I get the smaller spring attached without cutting the large spring off? The end of the smaller will not come out enough to clear the end of the big spring.

According to the instructions for the Gorilla-Lift Utility Trailer Tailgate Lift Assist part # GL1, you must cut the big outer spring to remove the small inner spring. I have attached an excerpt from the instruction manual below which states this. I have also linked the rest of the instructions below as well if you'd like to take a look for yourself.
