Can You Use a Wheel with a Larger Pilot Hole Diameter on a Trailer

Question:
I have a trailer of unknown brand 5x8 utilty. I need new wheels and tires. The wheel currentlu on the trailer are marked 5:30:12 LOAD C with 5 lugs. Trying to find replacements I notice the pilot hole I have is 2.75inch and replacements are listed as 2.95. Two questions 1 is the 2.95inch an acceptable replacement is lug pattern is 5 on 4.5? 2 can I use LOAD D wheels and tires that appear to have pilot holes 3.19?

Expert Reply:
Most trailer wheels are lug centric and not hub centric meaning that the wheels are centered on the hub with the lug nuts not the pilot hole. This in turn means that the pilot hole of your wheels does not need to match the pilot hole of your hub. However, the pilot hole on the wheels must exceed the pilot hole on the hub. Therefore, you will have no problems using a wheel with a 2.95" or 3.19" pilot hole on your trailer as long as they are lug centric.
If you are wanting to upgrade to load range D tires, I recommend the Kenda Bias Trailer Tire with White Wheel part # AM30859. As long as the weight of your trailer does not exceed 2,500 lbs and your hubs have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern then this combo will work well for you. It also comes with a 2 year warranty.
I have attached a review video of the wheel/tire combo for you as well.
