Is It Okay to Use a Trailer Wheel with a Bigger Center Hole Than Old Wheel Had

Updated 07/23/2025 | Published 07/12/2025

Question:

Want to replace my old 1974 boat trailer wheels for new galvanized wheels, size: 14x6 with 5 lug 4.5” bolt pattern. My current wheels have a center bore measuring 2.5”. Can’t find any new wheels with center bore less than 3.19”. Is that measurement within acceptable limits?

Hey Tom, as long as your current wheels are held on with lug nuts and not wheel bolts that screw into the hub having a larger pilot diameter wheel like the part # AM20364 would be just fine. Lug nuts are designed to center the wheel so having a larger pilot diameter would not be an issue. If the wheel uses wheel bolts instead the wheel is centering on the center hole so then it is vital that the diameter is an exact match.

I mentioned your comments to several trade people, including a local trailer repair shop, a local tire shop, and even the trailer manufacturer, and none said they had never heard of such. Primary response among all of them was that since the lug bolts have the same bevel as the lug nuts, they all center and secure the wheel the same. More confusing than ever.

@Tom Do your wheel bolts have a taper on them or are they totally flat on the underside of the bolt head? If they have a taper then use they will center the wheel but in general they are flat.

@Tom Then those are ones that would center the wheel. So my initial statement does not apply for you. Some of that is due to the age of your trailer as it wasn't really until around the late 90's that things got mostly standardized for trailer axle components.
