If your trailer has a 6-way connector like a lot of gooseneck trailers do the issue is that the 12 volt power and brake output circuits are sometimes swapped since some people wire them both ways.

The solution is to swap the two circuits if you find yourself in a situation where the brakes lock when a trailer is connected. On a 6-way the circuits are the pins in the center and 10:00 facing opening of socket on tow vehicle.
