The plug-in adapter that you need depends on what brake controller you have. If you don't already have one, then I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 as it is one of our most popular choices and has received great customer reviews. The plug-in adapter needed to install this brake controller on your 1996 Dodge Ram 2500 is part # 3020-P.
Then for a 7-Way you need the Tow Ready # 30717 and some wiring. If you only need the brake controller function, then you simply need to route 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1 from the blue wire to the driver side of your vehicle up to the front wheel well. Once there you should see a connector. Using a circuit tester # PTW2993 check to see which one gets hot when you use the manual override with your brake controller. Splice that into whichever wire (usually blue) that will activate your trailer brakes.
If you need 12V power at the 7-Way as well then you will need Deka Jacketed 2 Wire # 10-2-1 instead. Connect one to the blue wire and one to the black wire on the adapter. The one from the blue wire will be connected in the manner above while the other wire will need to be routed to your battery with a 40-amp circuit breaker # 9510.
I have attached some helpful articles that you can reference for the installation.
