Question:
Does this product run through the connection area to the outside so that it can be permanently attached to the hitch?

The Plug-N-Tow TM Wiring Connector with Circuit Protection, part # 42535, connects to a port located under a panel in the rear of the vehicle on the driver side. Most people will leave the connector in the back of their Jeep until they need to use it, and then just pull it out the back door. If you want to route the connector out for a permanent outer mounting application, usually a rubber grommet can be found in the same area as the port. You can cut a slit in the grommet, pass the connector through, and then reseal the grommet with silicone.
If you do route the harness outside the vehicle I would recommend the use of a mounting bracket. The 4-Pole Flat Mounting Bracket, part # 18144, can be installed alone or used with the No-Drill Mount Bracket, item # 18140, for an easy no drill installation.
