How To Find Replacement Hub and Drum For Dexter Axle

Updated 09/08/2017 | Published 09/06/2017

Question:

Please bare with me as Im asking this for my husband and so Im going off the information he provided me with. Here is my question. I have what I believe to be the part number for the brake drum Im needing replaced. However, Ive entered this number: 8D-555PA-D7 with absolutely nothing coming up. Another part number I have found is B12E-22, I believe that to be for the trailer brake assembly. Is there anyway to cross reference these numbers to find the right replacement brake drum? The brand on the drum is AxleTek and the axle is from Dexter.

It sounds like you are needing to replace the hub and drum assemblies on your trailer. The B12E-22 number you mentioned in your question does indeed correspond to an electric brake assembly, specifically the etrailer.com # AKEBRK-6R for the Right Hand and # AKEBRK-6L for the Left Hand. If you are just needing the brake assemblies, this will be all that you need and will provide a perfect replacement.

I was unable to find any information on your existing hub/drum using the 8D-555PA-D7 number that you found. In order to find the correct hub and drum assembly for your trailer, we will need to determine what kind of spindle the trailer has. The most accurate way to do this is to simply remove the hubs and check for the bearing numbers that should be stamped onto the bearings themselves. If you cannot locate these numbers, you can also measure the spindle at various locations where the bearings sit. I have attached an image that shows where these measurements should be taken. I recommend using a digital caliper like # PTW80157, as the measurements will need to be exact.

You will also want to determine both the axle capacity on the trailer and the bolt pattern for your existing hubs. I have attached an article that explains how to measure your bolt pattern.

For example, the etrailer.com Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K is designed for 5,200-6,000 pound axles and features a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The hub uses the # 25580 inner bearing and # 15123 outer bearing.

I have attached a link that will take you to our available selection of hub and drum assemblies along with a couple of articles that you might find helpful.
