Features to know about

Built for Heavy Loads: 10,000-lb Dexter Strength

When you’re hauling serious weight, you need a hub that’s up to the job. This Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly is built for 10,000-lb axles and supports up to 5,000 lbs per hub. It’s designed for 12-1/4" diameter x 4" wide drums and uses a 3-1/4" inner diameter oil seal for a tight, reliable fit. The precision machining and standard-grade construction mean it handles demanding loads mile after mile.

Strong and Reliable Fitment: 8 on 6-1/2" Bolt Pattern with 5/8" Studs

Keeping everything tight and true starts with the right hub geometry. This model uses an 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern with 5/8" diameter x 1-1/16" long drive-in studs, giving you the solid wheel connection heavy trailers require. The design fits wheels from 16" through 17-1/2", so you get flexibility without compromising strength or alignment.

Easy Bearing and Seal Matching: Clear Specs for Confident Setup

No guessing which parts fit. The hub takes an inner bearing (395S, 2.625" ID), outer bearing (387A, 2.250" ID), inner race (394A), outer race (382A), and oil seal (10-56) with a 3.125" inner diameter and 4.500" outer diameter—all sold separately. These clear specs make it straightforward to match your spindle and components with confidence.

Straightforward Installation: Designed for Standard Dexter Components

Swapping or upgrading is simple since this hub uses standard Dexter parts throughout. The precision-machined bores and pre-sized stud holes make installation smooth without modification. Once paired with the correct bearings, seal, and hardware, it’s ready to roll with dependable performance that holds up under the toughest towing conditions.

Determining Bolt Pattern

1. Count the lug holes

Look at the wheel hub or the back of the wheel and count how many lug holes there are(also called bolt holes).

Common configurations include: 4-lug, 5-lug, 6-lug and 8 lug

2a. For even lug counts (4-lug, 6-lug, 8-lug)

Measure from the center of one lug hole directly across to the center of the hole opposite it.

Center to Center
Common configurations: 4 on 4", 6 on 5.5", 8 on 6.5"

2b. For odd lug counts (5-lug)

Measure from the center of one lug hole to the outer edge of the hole directly across (not center-to-center since there's no directly opposite hole).

Center to Outside Edge
Common configurations: 5 on 4.5" (most popular), 5 on 5", 5 on 4.75", 5 on 5.5"

If you have a light boat trailer but want to get rid of the 12 inch wheels and upgrade to 13 or 14 you will need this larger hub in order to have the proper mounting surface for the wheels while keeping your 1 inch spindles. This kit has everything needed including larger lug nuts. This gives me piece of mind knowing my hubs, bearings, wheels, and tires are not straining to haul the load.

by:

IL N Y AVAIT PAS DE BEARING NI NUT DE ROUE , POURTANT SUR LE DESSIN IL EN A. [There was no wheel bearing or nut included, even though the diagram shows them.]

by:

ETrailer staff was able to find a hub to fit a very old spindle from a farm buggy we pull by tractor for kids to ride. They were able to match bearing sizes and sell odd size grease seal. Old tires, wheels and hubs were shot. A friend gave 4 jeep wheels to complete the job making a cool update.

by:

Awesome stuff. Between etrailer & Dexter we found a perfect idler hub replacement to go from demountable rims to rims w/lug nuts.
All I need now are rims & tires.

by:

In building two tear drop trailers (see attached picture) and do to a miss measurement I ended up with two axles without hubs. (another story!) So I decided to order hub and start making a utility trailer. I enjoy etrailer's website. It is very helpful in selecting the right trailer parts. Delivery was good but the packaging was poor. The bearing, seal, lug nuts and cap are all in one bag taped to the heavy hub. One of the seal were bent but the rubber part looked OK, so I straighten it the best I could and install it anyway. I did not want to go through the hassle of returning it for a new one.

by:

The young lady was earnestly working to resolve my needs. I would never hesitate to work with this team for all my trailer needs.

by:

No grease cap or zerk to replace the one that came off the old hub. No way to grease other than removing the cap everytime. Not ideal for a marine trailer application. Got to find a different cap now.

It looks like your shopping experience didnt go very well with etrailer. If you would like to share more about what happened I would be happy to assist you.

by:

I live in a very remote part of Nv. The internet is the closest shopping Within 145 miles. It is my pleasure to say you are one of the best .I got my parts and on time plus it was at a good price

by:

Lost my part ,reordered my part very fast.No questions asked sent me my replacement part.

by:

The product was good. The boxes that you used for shipping was marginal at best. You don't put 60 pounds of steel in a box made for greeting cards.

  • Replacement Hub/Drum and Brake Assemblies for Dexter 12k Axle
Hey Mike, we have a similar hub that does fit a 12k Dexter dually hub with the part # 8-214-8UC1. The 10k part # 8-214-5 does have same bearings and seal so it would fit technically but it would not be weight rated for a 12k axle. For a drum you would then want the part # DX34XR and brake assemblies part # AKEBRK-12. However, we do not carry a 12k spindle at this time.

  • Complete Disc Brake Conversion Kit For A Tandem 10,000 Pound Dexter Axle
Though we do not sell complete conversion kits with all the necessary parts to convert to disc brakes, we do have all the parts to put it together for your 10,000 pound Dexter axle we have a couple options. The first option is the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R1058D11E. This kit is designed for Dexter axles with oil bath hubs that are made after May 2013. The second option is the # K2R1058D11HD. This kit is made for axles prior to 2009. Both systems mentioned are slip-on-over-the-hub rotors....

  • Availability of Spindle and Hubs for 10,000 lb Trailer Axle
As you may have noticed, the highest capacity spindle we carry is for a 7,000 lb axle, # TRU37FR. Your best bet is to source the spindles for a 10,000 lb axle through a local trailer shop or dealer. If are able to source the spindles, we do have hubs for 10,000 lb axles. I'll list them below: # 8-430-5UC3 - Dexter Hub Drum for 9K to 10K axles manufactured after July 2009 (for non ABS brakes) - uses inner bearing # 387A, outer bearing # 25580 and oil seal # 10-51 # K08-288-90 - Dexter...

  • Disc Brake Availability for 10,000 lb Dexter Torsion Axles
The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R1058D13 looks like it is exactly what you are needing. It is compatible with 10,000 lbs Dexter torsion axles, 17-1/2 inch wheels, and a hydraulic system. It does require a psi rating of 1,500 so as long as your EOH actuator can give that much output this is a viable option. To finish confirming that this kit will work great for your application you will just need to make sure that you have a 7 bolt brake mounting flange location and that your current wheels...

  • Proper Torque Rating for Spindle Nut
When our installers replace a trailer hub, there isn't a set torque spec used when tightening the spindle nut. The hub is placed on the spindle, making sure the inner and outer bearings are correctly seated. The spindle nut is then run down until you start feeling resistance. At that point, spin the hub and check for end play (wobble). If the hub still seems a bit loose, you can run the nut down a bit more. As you'll see in the video I've linked to, tightening the nut is something you'll...

  • Technical Drawing for Dexter Hub Assembly # 8-214-5
I spoke with my contact at Dexter and was able to obtain the technical drawing for the Trailer Hub Assembly, # 8-214-5. Keep in mind that this hub was designed to fit a spindle from a 10K Dexter axle. I have attached this drawing for you. We do offer part # 8-214-5UC1 which includes the trailer hub assembly, lug nuts, inner bearing ( # 395S ) and race, outer bearing ( # 387A ) and race, oil seal and cap. These are designed to fit 10,000-lb axles with spindles that require a 3-1/4" ID grease...

  • Can a Trailer Wheel have a Larger Center Hole than the Hub
There are 2 different ways that a wheel secures to a hub. Either it secures to the hub using lug nuts or it secures to the wheel with wheel bolts. Wheels that attach using lug nuts can have a larger pilot hole because the wheel is centered using the lug nuts. The pilot hole cannot be smaller on the wheel though. If the wheel secures using lug bolts then it has to be an exact fit because the wheel centers on the hub itself and the bolts just hold it in place. If you do have this type of...

  • Availability of Disk Brake Conversion Kit for Tandem 10,000 Pound Dexter Axles
While there is not an all inclusive kit with everything you need to convert to disk brakes, we do have the necessary parts to put it all together. For a 10,000 lb Dexter axle there are two options. One is the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R1058D11E which is designed for Dexter axles with oil bath hubs made after May 2013 and the other is the # K2R1058D11HD for those made prior to 2009. • Replacement Disc Brake Hubs for Hayes 10,000 lbs Axles
We do not have any individual replacement disc brake hubs for 10,000 lbs Hayes axles. The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit item # K2HR10-13-HD would be the only option we have and it would replace both sides of your axle. It fits a #99 spindle with an Inner bearing item # 28580 and Outer bearing item # 25580. The Trailer Idler Hub Assembly item # 8-214-5 you were looking at fits Dexter 10,000 lbs axles with larger Inner bearing item # 395S and Outer bearing item # 387A.

The Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-214-5 that you referenced does fit a particular spindle but it's not something we have available (the highest capacity spindles we have are 6K units) and there's not really a standard model name for it like the # 42 spindle you mentioned that's typically found on 5,200 pound axles. The Dexter Hub Assembly # 8-215-5 uses a # 395S inner bearing, a # 387A outer bearing, and the # 10-56 oil seal that has a 3.125" inner diameter and a 4.500" outer...
