Question:
I purchased and installed this part last year - worked like a charm for my needs at the time U-Haul trailer but now I am looking at towing a small fiberglass camping trailer not yet purchased, e.g. Casita, Scamp, etc. 1. Is there an item that is a quick n dirty adapter from 4-pin to 7-pin that would allow me to plug and tow something home, understanding that there would only be tail/brake lights and no brake controller or aux power? 2. What do I need to replace this item with the appropriate 7-pin, including a brake controller? Thanks for your help!

I will be happy to help. There are a couple of ways you can add a 7-Way trailer connector to your 2007 Volvo XC90. If you just want the lights to function on the trailer then you can use # 37185. Your 4-Way will plug into this adapter and then you just have to mount it and ground the white wire to a bare metal surface. The other wires can be taped up and stowed out of the way.
If you want to have a fully functional 7-Way and a brake controller then instead of 37185 you will need # ETBC7. It will provide the 7-Way and the wiring and accessories needed to install a brake controller. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you.
For a brake controller I almost always recommend the P2 # 90885 because customers find it easy to set up and use and it is a reliable controller.
