Question:

can hitch risers safely be used for a cargo carrier? I am looking for a carrier 60x24 rated for 500lb with 2inch receiver but need it risen about 6 inches.

A cargo carrier could be used with a hitch adapter that offers you a 6 inch rise. It is important to keep in mind that using such a hitch adapter would reduce your trailer hitch's weight capacity by 50 percent. So for example, if your hitch has a 500 pound tongue weight capacity using the adapter would limit the hitch to no more than 250 pounds of tongue weight.

The only hitch adapter we offer that would provide you at least a 6 inch rise is the Malone Dual Hitch Extender for 2 Inch Trailer Hitches # MPG544. This adapter will extend the pin hole out 12 inches from the existing pin hole and the top hitch receiver offers the 7-1/2 inch rise. This adapter has a tongue weight capacity of up to 400 pounds.

If you can get by without the 6 inches of rise, we offer cargo carriers that have rises incorporated into the shank.
