Pin Box Upgrade to Replace Lippert 1621
Updated 06/20/2016 | Published 06/17/2016 >
Question:
Through measurements I have determined that my 2005 Keystone Laredo has a Lippert 1621. Im not sure what makes one a 1621 HDinch though. Mine is the long style of pin box. What determines if you need a long or medium pin box? Ive read that the tow vehicles bed length makes that determination. I have a short bed truck, would I be better off with a long or medium pin box?

The difference between a Lippert 1621 and 1621HD pin box is the heavier-gauge steel material used to construct it. Dimensionally they are the same.
Short bed trucks do have tougher time making sharp turns with a 5th wheel trailer due to the reduced cab-to-overhang clearance. This is why short beds are often used with a Sidewinder replacement pin box like 20K # RP34FR as a direct bolt-on replacement for a Lippert 1621. Sidewinders move the trailer pivot point back by 22-inches (far more than almost all sliding hitches) for improved turning clearance.
Reese also offers a 16K-rated air cushioned Sidewinder, part # RP61422, also a direct bolt-on replacement for the Lippert 1621 and 1632HD pin boxes. The internal air spring cushions both vertical and longitudinal shock for a more comfortable ride in addition to the improved turning clearance.
