You have what is called multiplexed wiring for the wiring of the taillights of your 2012 Volkwagen GTI. The trailer wiring kit part # 119250KIT is designed to work with this setup so what you will need to do is run the yellow wire of the harness to the left turn wire, the green wire to the right turn wire and then run the red wire to the brake/taillight circuit of the vehicle. You will note that the brown wire is not used.
The converter box of the # 119250KIT will be able to interpret the signal appropriately and apply the correct taillight functions of the trailer.
