How Much Should a Leaf Spring Bend and How Much Distance Should Be Between Axle and Trailer
Published 09/17/2015 >
Question:
When Leaf Spring part# e54SR is fully loaded, which is supposed to be 1,750 lbs, the leaf spring will turns from a curved shape to a flat shape. My question is how much distance the bottom of the spring goes up during this process? Is it 3? Is there any relation between load and bottom travel distance?

Expert Reply:
Leaf springs are indeed supposed to flex and will flatten out some when under load. This reduces the distance from the top of the axle to the underside of the trailer above it. There isn't a specific distance this has to be but if the trailer is bottoming out it could indicate that the springs are overloaded or the weight on the trailer needs to be distributed differently.
At the absolute most a new spring should only have 1-1/2 inches of deflection under maximum load.
