Should Breakaway Switch Wiring Have Current Running Through It

on my breakaway switch the breakaway cable there is power going though it. if i touch the frame of the trailer it sparks. thanks

One side of the breakaway switch wiring will have current running through it. As long as the plunger pin of the breakaway switch is inserted into the switch the other side of the wiring should have zero current running through it. Once you pull the pin it would allow the current to make it through the switch and go to your brake output circuit. I attached a picture that shows a wiring diagram.
