Question:
have a 2013 ford explorer AWD with tow package up to 5,000 lbs. have been told i need to have a trailer brake controller installed to pull a camper looking for a camper that will be around 3,000 to 3500 loaded. i can see the plug for the controller under the steering wheel area i believe. this makes me assume that the wiring to the hitch is there, i just need a controller? is this correct? if so, can you show me a few recommended controllers?

All you need is a brake controller and an install harness to install a brake controller in your 2013 Ford Explorer.
For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.
For an install harness you would want the # 3035-P. I attached an install video that shows these two products being installed in a 2014 Explorer similar to yours.
