I spoke with my contact at Tekonsha and he confirmed that you will definitely want to install a brake controller on your new Ford F-650 when towing a trailer with electric brakes. The major reason for using a brake controller is safety. Without a brake controller to engage the trailer brakes you would have to rely on the towing vehicle to stop itself and the trailer. Because trailers are often heavy there is a lot of momentum that needs to be slowed and vehicle brakes are not made for this application, especially in an emergency.
Usually trailer brakes and a brake controller are always recommended when the gross trailer weight, loaded and ready to tow, is greater than 1/2 of the vehicle's weight, or over 2,500 pounds.
I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Proportional Brake Controller # 90885. It will also be necessary to install the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller, # ETBC7. This kit includes everything you need to install an electric trailer brake controller and 7-way connector.
I have included an installation video of a trailer brake controller installation on a 2003 Ford F-650 for you to check out.
