Will Flexco Pull-Out Steps Work for You?

Pull-out steps are typically installed on travel trailers. The Flexco pull-out steps from Stromberg Carlson are easy to install and fold up underneath the camper for simple storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Mounting Bracket Stromberg

The Lippert pull-out steps attach to the underside of the camper chassis, directly beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available underneath your camper that lines up with the door frame, and measure the width and depth. You will need a mounting space that is at least 23-5/8" wide and 12" deep.

If it turns out you have more or less space beneath your doorway, there are other step assemblies available with bracket sizes ranging from 21-1/16" wide to 28-1/4" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

Outriggers for RV Steps

Outriggers - metal brackets that act as an extension (LC301704 - sold separately) - may be needed for installation depending on the model of your original stairs. These provide extra length if the old steps are longer or wider than the new.

Once you know where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, that spot will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Entry Height Stromberg

To determine how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, plus 3" to 9" to account for the drop from the bottom steps to the ground. This measurement will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays mounting bracket width measurements in the first column and entry height measurements in the second column. The third column shows the corresponding part numbers. Use the mounting bracket width and entry height measurements you took to determine which part number will fit your RV. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

Mounting Bracket Width Entry Height Part Number
21-1/16" 14-1/2" - 17-1/2" SMFP-1120
23-5/8" 19" - 22" SMFP-2120
24-1/4" 10-1/2" - 13-1/2" SMFP-1220
25" 14-1/2" - 17-1/2" SMFP-1100
26" 19" - 22" SMFP-2100
27-1/8" 30" - 33" SMFP-3200L
28-1/8" 26" - 29" SMFP-3100
28-1/8" 34" - 37" SMFP-4400
28-1/4" 10-1/2" - 13-1/2" SMFP-1200

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Make sure the camper is level on flat ground
  2. Lift the steps into the mounting space and prop into place
  3. If needed, mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill

    -Set aside steps before drilling

  4. If needed, install the outriggers
  5. Align step mounting holes and secure in place with carriage bolts and flange lock nuts

-Make sure the bracket is backed up fully against the I-beam on the chassis

    -Hardware not included

  6. Tighten hardware until snug
  7. Make sure assembly is sitting square and level
  8. Torque the hardware tight

  • Can Single Step of RV be Replaced by Double Step
Normally the double steps are a bit wider than the single steps, but the mounting hardware of the steps on the RV can pretty easily be moved if needed. Flexco Manual Pull-Out Steps # SMFP-2120 will be your best option for fit. They measure 20-1/2 inches at the mounting holes and the bracket measures 22-1/8. To use these steps you most likely will need to move your mounting outriggers or go with new ones like part # LC301704.

  • How to Choose Steps for a 1973 Airstream Trailer
I am certain we have but I don't exactly have a way to look up which ones that was. Therefore, in order to find the correct steps you would need to measure the distance between your outrigger brackets. You can then use this information to find the correct steps for your trailer. You will also want to make note of the distance from the ground to the top of the outrigger brackets as this will also be used to determine how many steps you need. If you can't find a step that matches the mounting...

  • Can Flexco Manual Pull-Out Steps for RVs Be Mounted With Top Holes
Hey Gerry! As long as the width and the mounting holes line up where your existing steps are you can mount the Flexco Manual Pull-Out Steps for RVs # SMFP-2120 using the top holes on the brackets. If your existing steps are longer or wider you will need the # LC301704 and # LC118155-72 to mount them. Any big trips coming up with your Winnebago before winter sets in?

  • Will Pull Out Steps fit 2011 Palomino Puma 27KFQ
The Manual Pull Out Steps part # SMFP-2100 that you mentioned are going to fit your 2011 Palomino Puma 27KFQ only when you use the Lippert Outriggers for Manual RV Steps # LC301704. If you need a smaller step you can use # SMFP-2120 instead. The mounting locations are different, so the outriggers are needed with either option.

Check out the Lippert Manual Pull-Out Steps # SMFP-2120. These would do great on your enclosed trailer to provide you with fold out steps. This is a double step. To install either you would want the Outriggers part # LC301704 so that the steps could easily install onto your trailer.

You will need to take a couple of quick measurements to see if the replacement steps we offer will work on your Forest River Trailer. Since you are going from 1 step to 2 steps for your manual pull out step setup on the 2016 Salem Cruise Lite the brackets of the 2 step systems are going to be wider. We do not carry a 2 step manual pull out step that would fit the 25" mounting space without the use of spacers with The Stromberg Carlson Flexco # SMFP-2120 which we do not recommend because of stability reasons. From the photos I've seen of your 2015 FR Shasta Flyte 215CK, it looks like you need a 2-step unit. To identify the correct replacement, you'll want to determine the width of the mounting base of your existing steps. If that base is about 27-1/2 inches, the Flexco # SMFP-2100 would be a good choice. If the base is around 25-1/2 inches in width, go with the Lippert # LC432682 or for a 23-5/8 inch mounting base width, use the Flexco # SMFP-2120. The CR Brophy # AS23 steps you referenced...
