I installed the kit on my 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser, which was already equipped with the factory 4 wire connector, and it was pretty straight forward. Of course, it's universal kit so there are lots of variables between vehicles, bur that being said, it fit mine just fine. The only thing I did differently is tapped the brake light circuit at the master cylinder with the included Scotch Lock rather than at the brake pedal since my vehicle has a manual transmission and the clutch pedal made it all but impossible to access the circuit there. Overall, the hardware seems to be of good quality and the instructions were fairly easy to follow. I must say the included 4-wire connector extension isn't very secure in the connector bracket, but a little RTV should fix that. I will be towing a lightweight A-frame trailer and I'm sure this is just what I need.


I've had this trailer hitch on my 2013 Outback for a year now and love it! I tow a popup tent trailer and this hitch works excellently. It was a solid half day installation but my Dad and I were able to knock it out no problem! I love the discreet look of this since I'm not often towing the trailer. I couldn't recommend enough! Way better than the bulkier, less tasteful versions available.


Very straightforward install on our Jeep JKU. Plenty of wire and everything you need for the job. Only dropped it down to 4 stars for 2 reasons: First the provided screws to attach the bracket to the chassis are garbage. Both snapped off in the holes and had to be drilled out adding quite a lot of time and swearing to an otherwise easy job. Secondly the bracket attachment for the 4 pin plug is laughably bad. It is so loose that I am sure it will spend most of its life dangling after it falls off.

Be careful how close the wiring is to the muffler in the rear. Don ask how I discovered this...

I have a 2018 BMW X2 that did not come with a factory tow package. I had an etrailer hitch and 4 way plug installed last year and has been perfect since. I just recently purchased a camper and needed to have a Brake controller & Brake controller 7 way deluxe kit installed. My mechanic installed them with the detailed instructions that the units came with without any issues. The Tekonsha P3 is extremely user friendly and is working flawlessly. A bit overkill for my car being I can only tow max 3500 pounds, and my camper is 1 axel. this unit is rated up to 3 axles. I look at it like this way, when I trade in my BMW I will take my P3 with me. etrailer is amazing with the support & products they provide and I highly recommend them to anyone who asks me.

Converting the 4 way to seven way was straight forward, but the 4 way would not lock in place., either the rubber was to small or the metal bracket to big. It would just fallout a car wash would just rip it off. I had to make bracket to lock it in place. Quality problem


Easy to install and works well. My only complaint: Why does the kit come with cheap screws that begin rusting with the first month? Why not charge 50 cents more and provide stainless screws?


1 year review. I installed this product on my 2017 Toyota Highlander. As a person inexperienced with vehicle electrical systems, I found the installation challenging but achievable. I appreciated the advice and videos from I liked the final fit and finish on my vehicle when using manufacturer hitch and bumper kit.

After 1 year of usage, I have found 4 specific opportunities for improvement.

1. Water accumulation in the plug cover flap. After rain, I flip the flap up and water spills out of the crevice in the flap. There is also a small amount of water in the plug itself, but unclear if there is rain entering the socket or if this is from spillage when the flap is opened. This needs to be sealed to protect the plug!

2. Poor quality top mounting nuts and bolts. I overtightened one of the top bolts and it sheered off. I replaced it with zinc plated hardware. In my picture you can see after 1 year of use the included bolt on the left is corroded and the hardware store bolt looks new.

3. Poor quality front mounting screws. You can see the 4 rusting screws in the picture. These are designed to be exposed to weather, so I was surprised to find rust forming after the first few weeks.

4. Poor quality attachment point for the flat connector. The 4 way slips onto the side of the 7 way mount and is held on by rubber friction. It never stays in place and is always dangling.

One other suggestion is to offer a kit made for the newer wireless brake controllers. It could have less wire, fewer connectors, and cost less.

Because of the above problems I will have to replace the 7 way plug soon. Therefore I gave the product only 2 stars and would not recommend purchasing it.


We purchased a new Hyundai Palisade that had an OEM hitch and “prewiring” for trailering. Unfortunately this prewiring was only a 4-pin connector so it did not include wiring for controlling electric trailer brakes. We finally convinced the dealer to install a 7-pin connector - if we obtained the appropriate parts from George J. at recommended this kit (#ETBC7) as the parts we needed for conversion to a 7-pin connector. The car dealer’s service department installed the 7-pin connector while we waited for 5 hours. With a wireless brake controller, everything now works properly for towing our Casita.

This photo shows the installation after I modified it so that the connector was above the hitch instead of below it (too close to the ground). I had to fashion a bracket for appropriate spacing and I left several bolts that attach it to the bracket (oops).


The kit had everything I needed to complete the installation. It has worked great over the first year. I mount this near the jack on the camper and i have not had any water issues.


I installed the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires on my 2008 F150. Installation was easy following the instructions provided they were easy to understand with a great diagram it took me 2-3 hours by my self and it worked great is was good to see all my lights were still working on the 20 ft Haulmark and the brakes worked perfect.


The brake controller seems to work well on the jeep needed due to the weight of the trailer with only a 2 door the towing is very little mainly due to the stopping capabilities this makes me feel more confident towing the Camper and the wiring harness worked really well with very good installation instructions

Good Not Great! The fact that the unit cones with all the hardware is great! The plg is Made in China like everything else we buy. You can see picture I used bolts from my garage to secoure it to the frame instead of the plastic. The 4 way plug dangling is annoying.I have seen a puddle of water inside the 7 pin plug. I may need to install an o-ring on the spring door. It may be easier to drill a smaill 18 weep hole in the bottom of the receptacle

Very not happy was not wired right from factory. I had ordered long before my camper trip but life got busy and it wasn't until months after I ordered I installed and realized it was wrong from factory... Life is still busy so I never got a chance to follow up... I have been a customer for multiple vehicles and in most am happy, to be fair I never got a chance to warranty this or try to since months had gone buy from purchase to installation. See picture you can see it was off by one. I couldn't figure out the problem until I opened it up, the screw type picture is the cheap one I had to get for my trip but is wired correctly the sealed one is the one this company sold me (higher quality but for me unfortunately worthless)... Ps the cheap one that I had to buy from box store is now corroded and broke, but it's wired are from 4jul21 when I wired a day before my trip.

The self-installation process is no joke, if you don't often tinker with your car. It took a lot of trial and error and I ground down my self-tapping screws and had to buy more. But there are enough YouTube videos out there to get a lot of guidance and the products in this kit covered what was needed (apart from my second round of screws). The results look professional and the Redarc product is superb.


product was excellent and COMPLETE. everything you need with very DETAILED directions. i also ordered the prodigy P2 to complete my install. both were excellent and very recommended. only modification was on the actual plastic cover on bumper, i cut away minimal pieces with razor knife for perfect fit. you can look at all the pics to check out install. I took advantage of the reverse light wire and put LED light bar on back of trailer.

i made one email to e trailer for exact numbers for my make and model. the response was pretty impressive. Full detail with pictures and product numbers all set up so all i had to do was press order and pay for it. This is how american companies are supposed to be ran......I LOVE IT!!!!

Your products are awesome. Ive had zero issues with it and 5 of my friends purchased and installed the same set up in there trucks. Thanks again for the great products and excellent support.

I purchased this 7-pin connector for my 2007 FJ Cruiser. I was excited to get this installed, and found that the wiring was solid. I chose to cut the 4-pin connectors off of my FJ and this adapter. The fewer plugs the better! I like to solder and shrink wrap me connections. While the plug and wiring are really nice, the mounting bracket is junk. It’s very thin metal which appears to be simply painted, not powder coated. It also has a notch on the side for the 4-pin connector. This is the worst part. The rubber around the 4-pin is grooved, presumably to fit into the notch in the mounting plate. But it is not secure at all. The 4-pin simply falls out and dangles even with nothing connected. And there is no way to secure it. This is a significant design flaw.

Thank you for your review! It actually looks like you have that bracket on the wrong side of the 7-Way. The right side is a little wider so if you flip it to the left side youll have enough room for the 4-Way to fit properly.

About a year ago, I purchased a brake controller and parts to install a 7-pin trailer connector on my Ford Edge. The installation all went well and I used the Dielectric Grease to seal the wire connections at the connector. My four-star rating was given simply because I don't know if the grease is working as I hope it is. Time will tell more years down the road.
As a side note, I made an additional bracket to enclose both connectors (4-pin & 7-Ping, see photo) to keep the 4-Pin connector from sliding out of place because it was only retained on three sides without my bracket.


This kit had almost everything I needed to do the install. And likely would have had I not chosen my very particular hidden/long path for running the wire. And the location of my breakers. It was easy enough to add some more wire from a spool I had around. 100% recommend this for install. I just needed another 5 feet of wire. installed on 2012 Dodge Durango.


1981 Ford F-250. Found the in-place junction connector back by rear bumper on driver's side. Separating the two parts was a chore...guess it was frozen together from 40 years. Anyway, used a screw driver to shimmy the pieces apart and then two vice grips to separate the connection...maybe not a pro move, but it worked. Seemed harder to do than it should have and I almost gave up. Anyway.
Once I had the wire junction connector separated on the original part the install of the new etrailer part was plug-and-play and all lights worked on truck. Did not test 4-pin to a rig connection. Planning to connect the 4-pin to a 7-blade converter kit from etrailer. Will report on that.


excellent package! Only complaint is the ground wire on the 7 way could be 2 inches longer and the instructions for reverse backup light options needs to be explained better. Travel trailers have backup lights!


Everything fits and works exactly as needed! Took me about 2 hours to install because I have very little experience working on cars and I was missing a tool or 2, but that’s a me problem and nothing to do with the equipment.
The only thing missing is a small length of extra red wire to help connect to the brake signal line. It’s probably not needed for all installs, but I needed a few feet to reach the brake controller wiring. Easy to find at the car store.

I used this along with an additional brake controller wiring harness so I could easily remove the controller and plug in when needed.


Product was exactly as described installation was very easy. I used this kit on my 01 Dodge Ram 4x4 because my truck did not have a trailer brake controller.


Fantastic kit that greatly simplified installing a 7 way plug on my 2004 Honda Pilot. I swapped out the butt connectors and ring terminals for ones with heat shrink, but everything else appears to be good quality. It took me about twice as long as advertised to install but that’s probably because I chose to run the wiring inside the vehicle instead of underneath.


Very good, however fitted to a Subaru Crosstrek - not an easy job because you cannot get to the brake pedal switch connections. However made a "work-a-round". Used Curt tow hitch, this wiring harness and Tekonsha Primus brake controller. Works very well.

Worked very well last year - plan trips later this year.

This is a great product. I think etrailer made it easy for our novice DIY. I basically read the instructions and watched video a few times before I start. The installation is not difficult; it is just a dirty and tiring work.
One thing I should mention, is that grounding is very important. I wasted most of my time for not properly grounding. The first place you encounter the issue of grounding will be when you test the break wire in the box under the dash to the left side of the steering column. Using the tester, you must find a bare metal part for grounding, otherwise the other end of the tester would lit up properly. This is not mentioned or emphasized in the video or written instructions. Painted surface won't do since it insulates the metal. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why the break wire won't lit up, calling etrailer customer service representatives, nobody really told me this. I basically figured out by myself. Hopefully you won't need to waste time on this.
The second place you will encounter grounding is in the front engine box near the battery where you must drill into the frame to attach the ground wire, like instructed by etrailer. But I didn't like to drill "unnecessary" holes into my frame, I just used a ziptie to attach the ground wire to the frame, so grounding wasn't good. I eventually figure out I must drill into the frame to get to the bare metal for grounding.
The 3rd place is in the back, there is another ground wire you must drill into the frame to reach bare metal. I choose to drill into the tire tub, since it won't affect the structure integrity of the frame rails. Either way it will work as long as you drill into the bare metal.
The wires supplied by etrailer is long enough for this installation.

    For vehicles with and without the adaptive cruise control the install of the Brake Controller Install kit part # ETBC7 would be the same. The install would not have any connection to the adaptive cruise control in any way so it would not be a problem. I attached an install video we have that shows the kit installed on a similar 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon as well.

  • Why Does Brake Controller Install Kit # ETBC7 Come with Three Breakers When Only 2 Get Used
    There are two circuit breaker options for the power wire for the brake controller. The 40 amp breaker is for the 12 volt power circuit of the 7-way. The 20 and 30 amp breakers are for the brake controller install. Typically if you use up to 2 brake axles you'll want a 20 amp breaker and if you have more than that you'd want to use the 30 amp breaker.   • Troubleshooting Manual Override Causing Error Message on Brake Controller
    The brake controller error is not connected to the brake pedal. The short is either due to a poor ground connection or another issue with the power coming into the unit. It sounds like the circuit breaker is tripping (thus the click) when you use the manual override to send power to the 7-way. I recommend checking the connections at that breaker to ensure everything is grounded correctly to bare metal and that your wiring connections are good. You should have the 30 amp circuit breaker...

    If all you need is trailer lighting circuits and a brake controller to function you do not have to connect the power (black) wire of the Brake Controller install kit part # ETBC7. It comes with the kit but is not needed for the operation of a brake controller.

  • Can Brake Controller Be Wired to Dodge Sprinter RV without Green Plug Under Seat or Dash
    We've used the brake controller install kit part # ETBC7 on a similar Sprinter as your 2010 Dodge model. I attached a link to the video that shows the process down below. The biggest hurdle to get over when installing this kit on a vehicle is tracking down the stoplight circuit on the brake pedal wiring. That's covered in the video though. Aside from that it's just basic wiring.
