Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Ball - Trailer Hitch Ball - C40085 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number C40085. This is the CURT hitch ball with a 2-5/16" diameter. The hitch ball is going to provide a good connection point for your trailer's coupler. It's going to have the fine threads at this portion here. This is going to provide a nice, tight, strong grip. It's made from a heat-treated steel construction.

It's very strong and durable. It's also going to feature that nice, raw, machine finish; it gives it a nice rugged look. It's also going to be corrosion and rust-resistant. Now along with the hitch ball you're going to get the lock washer, and you're also going to get the nut as well as a set of instructions that's going to walk you through how to install it and how to get it torqued down, and what specification to get it torqued to. The hitch ball diameter again is going to measure 2-5/16". This is designed to fit ball platforms that are 3/8" to 1" thick. It's going to offer a 30,000 pound capacity.

The shank diameter on this hitch ball is going to measure 1-1/4". If we take a measurement of the shank length measuring from this point here to the end of the threads that's going to give us a measurement of about 2-3/4". Really simple installation process. You place the threaded portion down through the ball hole on your ball mount. Now you need to make sure that the hole size on your ball mount is not more than 1/16" larger in diameter than the threaded shank right here. You place this through your ball mount, place on the lock washer followed by the nut.

You can go ahead and get it hand tight. This is going to require a 1-7/8" socket or wrench. Once you get it all the way tightened down, all you got to do is torque it to the specifications. For this particular hitch ball that's going to be 450 foot pounds of torque. That's going to do it for our review of part number C40085.

This is the 2-5/16" hitch ball from CURT. .

I've had this for about one week now. It is doing its job so far. The size is by far more than it'll ever be tested for but the bigger the better. The matte finish is a nice alternative to the others. The only problem is its not the easiest to install. It would have been nice if the bottom of the shank was flat so the pliers can grab it more firmly when tightening it. Otherwise it's a great fit. 461745

This has been tested pretty close to its limit. It is strong and durable even after one year. This should last many years.

This was my first time ordering, and I was very impress with the FAST shipment, excellent protective packaging, and very nice items. I was very impress with the website that provided clear information about the products. Other individual comments was very useful, along with the instructional videos. I have already place another order for more items I need for my travel trailer. Awesome company to interact with, along with the great prices. Thank you! 184822

The product I purchased, a 2-5/16" hitch 30,000 lbs ball, is very nice quality. I was very impressed. I had looked locally for a similar product, but was only able to find a hitch ball for about twice as much cost. As to the service from etrailer, I was equally impressed. Soon after I ordered the product, I recieved a personal email expressing thanks for the purchase. While I realize this may have been an automatic "canned" response, I got the feeling there was custormer interest and I could respond in email if I wished. Thank you. I will continue to order all my trailer and hitch needs from etrailer. 140805

It's just a 2 5/16" trailer ball, right? Well, no, not exactly; it's a dead-serious, well-engineered piece of equipment that, if it fails catastrophically will ruin your day! These folks offer primo items like this for fair prices and, unless you're desperate for it and can't wait, doesn't rip you off for shipping the thing to your door. I'm just a guy with a truck and a travel trailer but each time I've bought stuff from these fine folks I've got what I thought I'd ordered with absolutely no surprises, so I give them just what they deserve: 5 stars! 343532

Great price and 30k pound hitch that looks great as well. Still have not figured out how you torque it to 450ftlbs, but I will get it tight. It does not have flats on the ball side to hold tight. Will work great as the replacement gooseneck ball on my flatbed. Great prices and shipping is reasonable and fairly fast on all products. Will buy from Etrailers and tell others whenever they are looking for parts. 551352

The ball is fine. But, the nut is 1 7/8, and is supposed to be torqued to 450 foot pounds. Who has a wrench that big? Not me. Nor my local Ace Hardware. I asked Etrailer.com if they would torque on the ball to the hitch that I ordered at the same time. They told me "no", they didn't have a wrench that big - ! So, I ordered a socket and a 35 inch breaker bar from amazon - for $70 - more than my new hitch and ball costs. At least shipping is free. Etrailer.com has lousy service/product support. 505785

Comments

Thomas, thank you for your review. Yes, the ball does need to be torqued to 450 lbs. If you do not have a torque wrench that will torque that much weight most mechanic shops will let you rent one or torque the ball for you for a small fee.

Products have been excellent, website is easy to use. Only complaint....shipping. My black water tank valve which is plastic and fairly fragile was put in the same box as my 2 5/16 ball and 2 1/2 hitch which together probably weigh 30lbs. When the package arrived (in true UPD fashion) you could tell the box had been thrown around. Luckily the valve was not damaged.....My thought is the valve and hitch/ball should've been shipped separate. 613384

I recently bought parts to replace a 30K lb stolen equalizing hitch. As I still had the half of the components, my best path was buy replacement parts including shank, hitch pin, hitch base and ball with all hardware. This saved me $100+ over buying a whole new hitch system. The quality of the hardware and rapid delivery (around Christmas) from etrailer was excellent. John M 460943

When choosing a WD system for your towing setup you will need to make sure that the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your setup falls in the middle of the Tongue Weight (TW) range of your WD system. You can find your TTW by adding the TW of your fully loaded...

  • Can TorkLift Everest Weight Distribution be Used with a SuperTruss Extension
  • You have purchased the TorkLift SuperHitch Magnum # TLF1008-30, SuperTruss extension # TLE1548, 7-Way extension # TLW6548, ball # C40085, Everest weight distribution system # TLWD1000, and shank # TLM9011. The hitch and SuperTruss extension along with the 7-Way extension are compatible with each other. The shank, # TLM9011, is compatible with the Everest system, # TLWD1000. But the shank is not compatible with the SuperTruss extension. You can use the Everest system with the shank...

  • Weight Distribution System Recommendation for a Trailer with 1,800 lb Tongue Weight
  • 1,800 lbs is quite a bit of tongue weight, but we do have a weight distribution system rated for that. We have the TorkLift Everest part # TLWD1000 that would work well for you. On your 2014 Chevy Silverado 2500 you would need to have the Torklift Superhitch part # TLC1209-30 installed though. You also will need the shank part # TLM9010 and the hitch ball part # C40085.

  • Towing Capacity of 2016 Ford F-150 with 5.0L Engine
  • I took a look at the online towing chart for your 2016 Ford F-150 and it lists a maximum trailer weight of 10,000 pounds for your F-150 model that is equipped with the 5.0L engine, 3:55 axle ratio, and 145 inch wheelbase. I do recommend verifying this information in your copy of the owner's manual or by checking with a local Ford dealer. I am not sure what your truck is already equipped with in terms of towing components so I will recommend all the parts you would need in order to tow...

  • Weight Distribution System Needed for a Trailer with a Tongue Weight of 2,300 lbs.
  • If the loaded tongue weight (TW) of your trailer is around 2,300 lbs then any weight distribution (WD) system that is rated for a max of 1,200 lbs TW will not be strong enough to help out at all. Check your TW to ensure that it is 10-15% of the loaded weight of your trailer. If it isn't you need to move stuff around until you achieve the 10-15% area. If it is already 10-15% of the loaded weight of your trailer then the only WD system that we have that will help is the TorkLift SuperHitch...

  • Is the Curt Hitch Ball # C40085 Compatible with a Gooseneck Hitch
  • The Curt Hitch Ball # C40085 that you referenced is meant to fit a trailer hitch receiver ball mount. Due to its design it is not compatible with a gooseneck hitch. We do have some gooseneck hitch ball options like the Hide-A-Goose Gooseneck Hitch Ball # 19309, the Replacement Hitch Ball for B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitches # BWGNXA2006, and the Curt Pop-In Ball # C60601. These are specific to certain gooseneck hitches though so you will need to make sure that you choose the correct...

  • Recommended Parts Needed To Rebuild Tri-Axle Trailer With EOH Brakes
  • We have many of the components that will work for you but we do not carry axles that would be big enough to handle the heavy load you said your boat and trailer weigh. I recommend finding a dealer locally to get the right axle for your trailer and boat. When they build the axles for you they should also install brake mounting flanges and spindles to match the other items recommended below. Since you mentioned 8,000 lb axles, I will use that figure for my recommendations for the other...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System to Tow 19K TW Toy Hauler With a 2017 Ram 3500
  • Since your current Tongue Weight (TW) is 1,900 lbs the Reese Titan Weight Distribution (WD) Shank # RP54977 will not be compatible since it is only rated for 1,700 lbs. Keep in mind that the TW of your trailer needs to be 10-15% the weight of your loaded trailer. You will also want to make sure that the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your setup falls in the middle of the weight range that your WD system has. Your TTW can be found by adding the TW of your fully loaded and ready-to-go trailer...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 1993 Ford F-350 Cab and Chassis
  • For your 1993 Ford F-350 cab and chassis, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class IV - 2" # C14082 which is rated for 10,000 lbs and tongue weight of 1,000 lbs and goes to 12,000 lbs and 1,200 lbs tongue weight when paired with a weight distribution system. This is a larger capacity than some Class V hitches, and most likely will meet your needs. We don't currently have a manufacturer that makes a Class V hitch for your vehicle. With this hitch, I recommend...
