Video Transcript for 1-7/8" Hitch Ball Feature Review

Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer. And today we're taking a look at the Curt 1 7/8 Inch Ball. Now this is with a One Inch Diameter Shank. Now this steel ball is gonna be a sturdy, great option for a trailer with a 1 7/8 inch coupler. Now it also has the one inch diameter. So when shopping for your ball mount, make sure that you are getting one with a one inch opening so it matches the diameter of the shank.

The shank length on this is 2 1/8 inch. So you also wanna make sure that it's going to have threads sticking out when you tighten up your ball to your ball mount. Speaking of tightening up the ball mount, it's gonna be important when you install this, which is pretty easy, to torque this to the proper specs. Now you can see this does include the nut and the lock washer here. You're simply going to put a wrench on this nice flat slotted part, and then tighten this down with a torque wrench to the proper specifications that the manufacturer recommends.

Now, it's very important to torque this down with the torque wrench. That way it's not too tight or too loose when towing. So if you don't have a torque wrench, we'll sell those here at etrailer, or you can rent one at an auto parts store, generally. But it's very important that you have this torqued properly And that way you know, that this isn't going to wobble loose when you're towing something. Now the steel construction has a nice chrome finish on it.

So it looks really good. Now, sometimes when you hook up to your trailer, it's good to put a little bit of grease here, and that's going to maintain that chrome appearance for a long time. Now, as far as the weight rating goes, this is good for 3,500 pounds, which is a decent amount of weight. So before hooking up to your trailer and towing, you're also gonna wanna make sure that the rest of components are up to snuff with that weight rating. And that includes your ball mount, your hitch, and also your vehicle.

Now you wanna take the lowest number out of all of those and stick with that when towing and that way you're not overdoing it. And that was a look at the Curt 1 7/8 Inch Ball with the One Inch Diameter Shank. Thanks for watching..

  • Recommended Ball Mount for 2020 Hyundai Kona SEL
Hi Daniel; that information is a good start and with a little more I can help you find the best ball mount to tow a U-Haul trailer. Based on how low the 2020 Kona sits I'm sure you need a ball mount with a few inches of rise. To find the right rise/drop you're going to need two measurements, the hitch height and the coupler height. If you can measure from the ground (level ground) to the top of your hitch receiver opening that is what I need. You can see this in the help article attached...

  • Ball Mount for 2016 Ford Fusion
Assuming you are in that 9-10" range you can use the Draw-Tite Ball Mount # 80248. This has a 9-3/4" rise and a gross towing weight of 3,500 lbs which would be perfect for your trailer. You will also need # C40002 for a 1-7/8" ball or # 63845 for a 2" ball. Just to be sure, I'm going to run through the process to measure for rise/drop. The first thing you need to measure is the hitch height. With the tow vehicle parked on level ground, measure from the ground to the top of your hitch...

  • Adjustable Ball Mount Set that Has 1-7/8 inch and 2 inch Ball
We have a similar way to accomplish what you are looking for from the # C45901 but we don't have replacement platforms for it. So instead you'd want the shank part # AMAC1, two platforms # BA-1 and then the ball sizes you want # 63845 and # C40002.

  • Hitch Adapter to Tow Trailer and use Bike Rack
There is an option for you, though the part you asked about is not for use with trailers. Instead, I recommend the Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount with 2" Receiver for Bike Racks and Cargo Carriers # D210. This will give you a ball mount for use when towing your trailer, and a receiver above it which you can use for your bike rack. You can secure it to your Sienna's hitch with the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock # e98880 or Pin and Clip # PC3. For a hitch ball, depending on the size...

  • Do I Need A Weight Distribution System To Tow A 2400lb Camper With My 2012 Jeep Wrangler?
Anytime your gross trailer weight is more than 50% of your vehicle's weight or if the rear of your vehicle sags when the trailer is hooked up you will want to use a weight distribution hitch. Since your camper weighs 2400lbs and is more than 50% of your 2012 Jeep Wrangler's estimated curb weight of 3760lbs, it is definitely recommended to use a weight distribution system. I recommend going with Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Trunnion - 4,500 lbs GTW, 450 lbs TW...

  • Recommended Ball Mount To Replace Curt C45901 With Missing Parts
I reached out to my contact at Curt and while I have a complete replacement option for you, the ball mount section of the # C45901 is not available separately. Since there is no other ball mount option of the same style that will fit your shank, you will need to purchase another # C45901. In addition you will need a hitch ball with a 1" shank, the 1-7/8" # C40002, 2" # 40083, or 2-5/16" # C40005. I included a video of the # C45901 for you to take a look at.

  • Is Draw-Tite Ball Mount 2753 Okay to Use With 2-3/4" Rise if 3" Rise is Needed
Hi Hugh, You can 100% use the Draw-Tite Ball Mount # 2753 with its 2-3/4" rise measurement even if you need a 3" rise. It's pretty rare to get the literal exact amount of rise/drop with a ball mount as there's so many different things that can raise/lower the measurement by even just a bit (tire inflation, if you're on completely level ground, etc.), so within 1/4" is perfectly acceptable. The # 2753 includes a pin and clip so the only other thing you'd need is the 1-7/8" hitch ball,...

  • Will a 2" Hitch Ball Work w/ a 1-7/8" Coupler?
Nope, not at all. If your trailer's coupler is 1-7/8" you'll need to use a 1-7/8" hitch ball like the Curt item # C40002. This is a 1-7/8" hitch ball, that fits a 1" diameter hole in a ball mount, and has a 3,500 lbs capacity. What kind of a trailer and tow vehicle do you have?

When we had this installed on a 2014 BMW 3 series it had a ball height of 18-1/2". • Can Patriot Hitches Adjustable Drop Hitch Receiver Be Used With Hitch Extender
I do have a solution, but I would not recommend using a hitch extender with the Patriot Hitches Adjustable Drop Hitch Receiver # PH67SR. This receiver won't reduce the capacity of your hitch, but an extender will reduce the capacity by 50%. You're also going to be adding 3 parts to your hitch when you include the ball mount. Doing so will likely give you a lot of unwanted movement and a less than pleasant towing experience. Instead, I recommend using an extended ball mount like the Hidden...

To help alleviate the back and forth chucking you are experiencing with your 2 inch receiver there are a couple of things I recommend doing.
