Recommended Ball Mount for 2020 Hyundai Kona SEL

Updated 08/25/2024 | Published 08/19/2024

Question:

Hello. I have 2020 Hyundai Kona SEL gas engine. Recently had class 3 hitch and wiring installed by Green Mtn Cyclery Ephrata, PA. They did fantastic job and love the hitch for our bike rack. But now I am thinking I want to get hitch ball mount in case I want to rent and tow a light weight UHaul trailer. Im confused on all the heights, which one to get. With my car info above, are you able to suggest which hitch ball mount I should get? Or if you need more info let me know! Thank you, Daniel.

Hi Daniel; that information is a good start and with a little more I can help you find the best ball mount to tow a U-Haul trailer. Based on how low the 2020 Kona sits I'm sure you need a ball mount with a few inches of rise.

To find the right rise/drop you're going to need two measurements, the hitch height and the coupler height. If you can measure from the ground (level ground) to the top of your hitch receiver opening that is what I need. You can see this in the help article attached below.

Your typical U-Haul trailer needs a ball mount height of 18" - 19" so we can use that for our coupler height. Then we plug that information into Hitch Height (A) - Coupler Height (B) = Rise/Drop (C). If you can add your measurement in the comments below I will be able to find the a good option for your Kona.

Thank you for the response. Sitting on level ground the measurement from ground to the top of the hitch receiver opening is 10 1/2 (10.5) inches. So presumably we need rise in the 8" range, am I thinking correctly? If you could recommend your corresponding item number I should order I would appreciate it. Also I saw on the road someone had a little attachment they put on the bottom of the bumper to hold the wiring plug in place rather than have it loose. Then you could just plug the trailer wiring into that attachment on bottom of the bumper. Do you have something like that? Thank you Daniel

@Daniel an 8" rise would be correct. The Curt # C45112 would be perfect. U-Haul trailers will either use a 1-7/8" or 2" ball so you will also want the # C40002 and # 63845. As an alternative you could also get the Flint Hill Goods Adjustable Ball Mount # FHG25VR. This has the same 8" rise but as the name implies it can be adjusted. The minimum rise is 4" with a max/min drop of 10"/5" and a distance of 1-1/2" between adjustment holes. This gives you a little more versatility if you end up towing something else. It can use the same hitch balls listed above. For the mounting bracket you can use the Mounting Bracket 4-Pole Flat # 18144. If you don't want to drill to attach it we also have the No-Drill Mount for Electrical Mounting Bracket # 18140.
