Video Transcript for Front Mount Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Ford F-150 - Curt

Today on this 2014 Ford F150 SuperCrew Cab, we're going to show you part number C31068. This is Curt front-mount 2" receiver hitch. This is what the hitch looks like when it's installed the truck. As you can see, this is our 2" receiver right here, which has a nice collar around the front of it, and it uses a 5/8" hitch pin right here. The distance from the hitch pin hole in the center to the outside edge of the license plate here is going to be about 8-1/2". Our measurement from the top of the receiver opening down to the ground is about 11-3/4". This will vary with our 2-wheel drive like we have here or a 4-wheel driver where the chances are it will sit a little bit higher, plus tire sizes will throw it off as well.

Whatever accessories you put in, like a winch mount or something like that, you want to take that into consideration. When it's installed on the truck, half of the hitch is covered by the bumper cover at the bottom. You'll see the lower 2nd half of the hitch, which goes to a square tube. This hitch is rated for 5000 pounds gross trailer weight and 500 pounds tongue weight. If you're using that to maneuver a trailer around, that's your limitations. When you have a winch on the truck and you're using it, it has a 9000 pound max straight line pull. Now, we'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed.

We need to go ahead and remove this air dam right here. There's 2 bolts that install here and here. We'll use a 14mm socket to remove them and a long extension. Next, we need to go ahead and trim out the bottom of the fascia here. We'll go ahead and find the center rib and mark the center.

Then, we need to mark out 3-1/2" and go up about 1". I think it might be just as easy to just go along this bottom edge right here. To make our cut, we're simply going to use some tin snips first. Across the top, we'll use a sharp blade to score across, and then, we should be able to break it loose. We'll find a little bit will cut with a knife.

Clean up our edges if we need to, and we can move on. Let's go ahead and put our hardware into place. This little shroud right here, we can pop up and out of the way for now. Make sure to pull it back down when we're done after the hitch is installed. Next, we have this hardware we need to install on the truck. We have our long bolt with this block and 2 spacer. This will go through the frame and through the hitch. This is our passenger side. We'll do the same thing on the driver side. We need to take these flat washers, and we need to attach the washers on the frame of our vehicle. I'm just going to use some good ole' packing tape for it, but you can probably do the same thing with some electrical tape as well. You definitely want to make sure the frame is clean so the tape will stick. At this point, we can get an extra set of hands, and we'll go ahead and put the hitch up and run the bolts through. There will be a bracket that our hitch will fit around. We also need to work it up above the bumper cover as well. Make sure your bolt and spacer is pushed all the way the frame to the outside, and we'll install a flange nut. Now, we need to install our hardware to this point right here on our hitch. We need to install this bolt. To help us do that, we're going to use this bolt leader that comes with the kit. We're going to run it through the hole and out the access hole, which is a large oval on the inside edge of the frame. The square part on the bolt here will actually fit into the square part of the hole in the frame. There is no block that goes inside. Put it in head first and pull it out. Then, we'll install the matching flange nut. That was a our passenger side. We'll do this again on the driver side. You may want to make some last minute adjustments to make sure the hitch is sitting even on the frame. Once you're satisfied with it, then you can go ahead and tighten it down. Then, we'll torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. Let's go ahead and take this shroud and pull it back down into place, and we'll be finished with the install. That will finish it for part number C31068 from Curt, the 2" front-mount receiver hitch on our 2014 Ford F150 SuperCrew Cab. .

40 min to install - I wish I had a deep socket for install but was able to do it pretty easily with out. Video made it simple. I made the notch slightly to big - so I'll say no more than a 3.5 inch notch is needed. Thanks etrailer!!!! 317786

Wonderful product. I use it to carry a cargo basket to haul extra camping gear. We are primitive and dispersed campers with a four wheel pop up camper. Last year we were on the road six months traveled over 12K miles, the hitch was a blessing to have. 486174

Installed on a 2013 Ford F150 Crew Cab with Ecoboost. Did have to remove the lower air dam to install as the instructions say. The hitch fits on the vehicle perfectly, but does push up against the plastic trim below the bumper (which isn't a big deal). Installation took a little longer than expected, end up taking me about 1.5 hours. Ended up having to use a floor jack to lift the hitch while inserting the bolts. Installation would definitely be a lot easier with 2 people. Threading the last bolt through the frame with the enclosed wire proved to be a little difficult as well. Overall pleased with the sturdiness and look of the hitch. 154068

Excellent product fast delivery! The front mount trailer hitch fit perfectly on my 2011 f150, was easy to install, within an hour, the instructions were accurate. I used my motorcycle jack to raise the hitch to position. See pics. I use the front hitch to position my boat in tight spots. Thanks for a great product Rich 245757

I ordered a front trailer hitch for my 2010 Ford F150. I received the package, a little damage to the package, but it is a heavy trailer hitch, so this was not a surprise. The hitch is very well made, and sometimes you wonder if it will really fit without drilling holes. So, I took off one of the two air dams for ease of installation, and lifted the hitch into place. Two bolts were thru bolts, great fit, the other two bolts needed to "fished" thru the frame and tightened. This is what took the most time. Tightened all the bolts, reinstalled the air dam, and did have to put a notch in one of the air dams for a proper fit. Since my truck is really high in the back with a tonneau cover, I could not see my boat to back it up. Now, hooking it onto the front makes it really easy to launch in the water, and also easy to bring it down my driveway in one shot. Very happy with this product. Showed my buddy, and he said I never had seen one of these. 253682

The hitch on the front of my truck is used often, to back up my boat trailer and snowmobile trailer. It makes my life easier. Good product, fits well.

I purchased this product with the understanding it was a simple bolt on for my 2011 F-150 4X4 ecoboost, well it wasn't, the front air dam that needs a "slight trimming" would have to be cut in half to fit, it also interferes with the bumper facia, and to install this item you need to cram it against and bend the cross member that supports the inter-cooler for the turbos, am I happy no, would I recommend e-trailer that's a decision I haven't made yet. 133094

This is my 3rd front hitch from etrailer, and it was a perfect fit. Installed on my 2014 F150 to allow for the installation of a hitch mounted rod holder. Will definitely make future purchase from these guys. 154499

Tom, I have a new F150 2015 that I also purchased at Larson Ford, want to do the exact set up you have, but I plan on taking truck on beach do you take it on beach and if so any problems with clearance. I would appreciate any other comments you may have about this set up. Where did you get rod holder.

I got this for maneuvering boat trailers in tight spaces and will probably get a winch mount at some point too. It is easy to install. You will need to make sure you have the appropriate torque wrenches available and it definitely helps to have ramps to drive the front wheels up on. Another tip is to fish the bolt carrier coil from the back through the bolt hole and then out the front of the frame before putting the bolt in the coil and drawing it back to the bolt hole. Don't curve or bend the bolt carrier, in fact try to keep it straighter than how it arrives so with a little jiggling it won't hang up in the frame rail. That makes it really easy. I was able to install it myself in under an hour even after wasting a little time initially trying to fish the wire through from the front. I added a Curt cap to keep out of the front hitch while driving. 438290

The front mount hitch showed up in a couple days and was in great condition. The directions were top notch and the hitch fit as described. Took me less than an hour to install, and that included a trip to the store to get a deep well 15/16th socket (my standard 15/16 wouldn't fit onto the nut, and you need a solid fit when going to 210ft-lbs). I had read a review that said a hitch extender was needed with this mount, but my bike rack fits without an extender (barely - less than an inch of clearance, but it fits). 483507

2013 Ford Expedition

The Curt Front Mount Hitch Receiver was delivered on time and in good condition. It is a solidly built product with exact dimensions for my 2013 Ford Expedition. Instructions were more than adequate. It installed in less than one hour. No modifications were necessary. My primary use for this front mounted hitch is for a hitch mounted bike rack. After installing the hitch, I discovered my bike rack would not install correctly due to the hitch being set back too far. This made necessary the purchase of a hitch extender, which de-rates the hitch by 50%. This is not an issue for my application as I do not intend to carry more than 350 lbs on the bike rack. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase and with the customer service I received from etrailer. My only regret is that I would have purchased the extender with the hitch had I known it would be necessary. Knowledge of the set back distance for specific vehicles would be beneficial for certain applications. 130113

With the extender does the bike rack wobble more?

Hi Dan,Great question. Though the extender fit fairly snugly, it did allow a little more movement than I preferred so I added a StowAway Hitch Tightener. This took all the wobble out and the setup is as stiff as can be.

This is my second Curt Front mount Hitch Receiver I have purchased. I use it to launch my boat and wave runner. The mounting instructions need to be corrected. I placed this receiver on the front of a 2011 Ford F150 4wd. I found it easiest to place the Bolt on Forward passenger side first. The instructions said to place bolts and bushings from inside. There is not enough clearance between the radiator and the frame to place the bolt from inside out. I found it easiest to mount with the nuts closest to the radiator. I did not trim the bumper fascia and it still fits perfect. (plastic has some give) The 5/8 fish wires are great! All hardware is packaged and taped to Hitch. 121497

2017 Ford Expedition

I purchased this hitch for a 2017 Ford Expedition. This is the second hitch I have purchased from etrailer, the first being on my previous truck, a 2006 F-150. Ordering was easy, shipping was quick and customer service was super helpful. Not counting the time it took to get things together, it took me a hour to install the hitch by myself. Lifting the hitch in place by myself was a little awkward, mut I managed and it was easier once I got the first bolt in place. The directions were good, except they were written for a F-150. There are slight differences between the 150 and the Expedition. I was able to figure these out easily enough, but it would have been nice if the instructions mentioned them. The biggest difference between the instructions and my vechicle is I did not need to trim the fascia. Fortunately I lifted the hitch up and did a dry fit and discovered this before I trimmed anything. The other thing that was not mentioned in the instructions is there were dividers on each side of transmission cooler that attached to the lower air dam. I secured these to the hitch with zip ties when I was finished with the install. My bike rack fits nicely on the hitch. At first I was worried the hitch would sit too far back but there is just enough clearance when it is installed. All in all, it looks nice, was easy to install and now I can take bikes with me camping. 667767

2009 Ford F150 4x4 front hitch is/seems to be of solid construction... weld/vent holes on tubes could/should be smaller so that excessive water/contaminates couldn't/can't get inside to help prolong life of material. I installed by self, had no one to help me...hardest part of installation was measuring the center point of air dam... had to use flexible tape measure to wrap around arch of air dam... also used a floor jack to lift and hold hitch in place, until pushing of bolts through front mount holes... personally, but did work alright, the fish wires were bit short for rear mounting bolts to fish from front of frame opening, and working through the factory tow loop mounting bolts... The measurements for opening to cut in air dam, personally, are a bit excessive, the opening is a little bit larger than needed, but looks alright... instruction sheet says professional install time 30 min, and 60 min for novice/me, took me 45 min., so installation is very easy, also the instructions state tools needed, they should say a ''deep well'' 15/16 socket, standard socket will not tighten the 5/8'' nut on rear mounting bolts. Ground clearance is excellent, 10 1/2 inches from center of tube to the ground, stock ride 2009 F-150 no lift/leveling. Overall product looks/will work excellent for my application/purpose. 657494

Backing a short trailer like my teardrop by yourself can be a challenge. By the time you see the trailer respond to steering it's too late to make easy corrections. I installed the front hitch to allow me to see everything while pushing the trailer into the tightest spaces. The installation was made easier with my motorcycle lift. Written instructions were good but viewing the video from the website first is definitely a good idea. Fit and finish are excellent as are etrailer's knowledgeable staff. Very happy with my purchase and will look to etrailer for my next purchase. 616534

The hitch was out of square upon delivery, which was discovered when trying to install it. After calling customer service, prompt advice was given which allowed us to return the hitch to square and install safely without marring or voiding warranty. Assistance was detailed and concise and we will very likely utilize etrailer for future vehicle needs. This hitch was purchased for the purpose of attaching a snow plow to our pickup and fit well after slight modification. 614278

Perfect fit on my 2013 4WD F150. Two of us did the job in about 40 minutes. The video and included instructions very helpful. Removed the air dam and cut out a small section of the remaining plastic which is not noticeable unless you get under the truck to look. It’s solid and a perfect fit. It sets back a few inches so isn’t in the way when not being used. Some of my racks may need a short extension for handle bar clearance but I’ve had similar issues at the back of the truck. I pull a lot of trailers. This additional cargo space gives a lot of extra options, to include strength enough to mount my XT250 in the front. 613858

We are VERY happy with the front hitch. We pull a camper and rather than put the bikes on the roof this was a great alternative. We took our grandkids camping last summer and we were able to transport all the bikes. The bikes are below the driver's field of vision which was our initial concern, no problem. The hitch was a great price and we had a local garage do the install in one afternoon for $90.00. While it may look a little different than most traditional rear hitches, it is perfect for our needs! 542906

Hitch arrived in 4 days, very fast. Communication was excellent with George and Anna. Installing was fairly simple, just don’t drop the bolt sleeve in the truck frame channel or you’ll be fishing it out with a magnet. I almost panicked but got it done. Tried out the New Plow all worked a Great. etrailer is highly recommended by me. If I need something else they will be my first choice. Just one other note, get someone to help you, don’t install it alone. Used a motorcycle jack and took me 2 hours. At 63 years old just alittle too much. Thanks Again. 477737

I was disappointed that I had to take my skid plate off my Ford Raptor to install this hitch. I have had other front hitches that I did not have to do this. 449451

Looks great, tight fit, as it should be, cant wait to put the boat in a tight place between camper and fence, I put the front bolt in by opening hood, hitch is heavy as it should be, need lots of blocking to make it easier, I put a hitch in the receiver end to use as more leverage to pivot for rear bolt. ordered Monday was here on Friday, fast service. 433068
