Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Built-In Active Sway Control

The TruTrack weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved primarily thanks to the specially designed system head.

TruTrack Spring-Loaded Ball Bearings in Detents

On top of the trunnions, there are spring-loaded ball bearings that rest in detents built into the underside of the head. As you travel down the road normally, these ball bearings help to keep the trailer in a straight line by applying pressure inside these detents.

TruTrack Spring-Loaded Ball Bearings out of Detents

When sway occurs, the trunnions move inside the head, causing the ball bearings to come out of these detents. When this happens, the ball bearings ride along internal grooves in the head as they work to return to the detents to snap the trunnion back in place. This action effectively returns your trailer to center.

TruTrack Spring Bar Bracket

For additional sway control, the Curt TruTrack creates a rigid system of steel bars and L-brackets. These rub together to create friction, which prevents your trailer from getting off track behind your tow vehicle. Just keep in mind that, because the steel-on-steel friction of the bars and L-brackets is noisy, don't be alarmed if you hear some banging, creaking, and grinding. It's just the system working to correct sway.

Easy Head Tilt Adjustment

Traditionally, weight distribution systems have utilized a washer-style setup to set the right pitch at the head to help distribute your tongue weight properly. While this method allows you to fine-tune the setup at the time of installation, it requires some patience. It's time consuming because you'll have to take the head unit apart, adjust the number of washers, maybe check the positions of your brackets, and then check to see if your ride is level. If it's not, you'll have to do it all over again until it is. Not to mention that you might have to repeat this process if your tongue weight changes or if you swap out your tow vehicle.

Curt TruTrack Head Position

This Curt system, however, only has 5 preset adjustment points to choose from, letting you quickly and conveniently achieve the proper tilt without ever needing to disassemble the head or keep track of washers. To fine-tune the system, simply start out in Position 1, which is the lowest head tilt setting. This setting applies the least amount of tension to the spring bars. As you continue to adjust the head tilt, more tension will be applied to the spring bars. Work through the positions in order until the correct tilt setting is determined. Once your tow vehicle is level, use the oval-shaped washers in conjunction with the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank in the desired position.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

  • Are Replacement Spring Bars Available For The Curt TruTrack 4P Weight Distribution System # C74RV
Hey Paul, I spoke with Curt and they stated that the Replacement Trunnion Spring Bar for Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System # C17535 would only be compatible with the # C17499. The Curt TruTrack 4P Trailer Mounted Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # C74RV (17520) is such a new part that Curt doesn't have replacement parts set up for it yet but is working on it. That being said neither of these would properly distribute the weight and would instead make it worse because...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a Intech Explore Trailer with Toyota Highlander Vehicle
I do recommend you use a weight distribution system on the Intech Explore Travel Trailer while towing with your 2018 Toyota Highlander. The reason for this is because the weight of the trailer will be over half the weight of the vehicle which is the rule we use for determining whether or not a system is needed. The tongue weight as you mentioned could also cause the vehicle to sag if not for a weight distribution system and this sag really will have a negative impact on the vehicle's braking....

  • What is Total Weight of Curt Weight Distribution System C17499
Hey B, the total weight of the Curt weight distribution system part # C17499 is right at 100 lbs. Are you wondering if this counts against your tongue weight figure? If so, it does not as it essentially "becomes a part of the hitch" as Curt has told us.

  • The Proper Set Up of Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System on 2007 GMC Sierra 1500
The goal of a weight distribution system such as the Curt TruTrack # C17499 is to ensure a level setup with the tow vehicle and trailer; you do not need to get back to the unloaded factory stance of your 2007 GMC Sierra 1500. Before using any weight distribution system it is important that you get the correct one. To determine the right system, you will first need to know your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch for a 7,500 lbs Trailer
Hey Lawrence, thanks for the information. For your 7,500 lbs trailer, I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control item # EQ37100ET. This system works with tongue weights between 600 lbs - 1,000 lbs so it's going to accommodate all that extra weight you have on the front and the standard load from whatever you're hauling. The brackets on the Equal-i-zer item # EQ37100ET can mount from 27" - 32" back from the center of coupler so you'll have no issues...

  • Will Curt TruTrack Shank Fit A Reese Strait-Line Wight Distribution System?
Great question, Jim! The shank that comes with the Curt TruTrack weight distribution systems follows industry standards that the vast majority of weight distribution systems use. It will definitely work with a Reese Strait-Line. With the capacities of the # C17499, I am guessing you are looking at the Strait-Line 12 lbs GTW, 1,200 lbs TW # RP66074? It looks like it would be the best option if you want a bit more capacity. I also really like the Strait-Line systems as they offer some of...

The Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System part # C17500 which is rated for up to 10,000 lbs gross trailer weight and 1,000 lbs tongue weight would work but it wouldn't perform as well as the Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System part # C17499 which is rated for 8,000 lbs gross trailer weight and 800 lbs tongue weight on a 5,000 lbs trailer which will likely have an actual tongue weight once loaded anywhere from 500 lbs - 750 lbs. • Differences Between The Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution Hitches # C17499 And # C17501
The difference between the Curt TruTrack # C17501 and # C17499 are their weight capacities and the # C17501 comes with a 2-5/16" hitch ball already installed, whereas the # C17499 would require you to purchase one and torque it down yourself. The heads are slightly different so while you could most likely just swap out the Trunnion bars on the # C17501 with the lower rated # C17535 I recommend just getting the # C17499 and a 2-5/16" hitch ball like # 19286. You can typically use or rent...

When choosing a weight distribution system you wan't to find a system that is rated properly for your loaded tongue weight. The Curt systems that you have mentioned part # C17499, part # C17500 and part # C17501 are all overrated for your tongue weight if it's 315 lbs loaded. This has a tongue weight range of 800-1,000 lbs and you'd most likely have a tongue weight around 640 to 750 lb. Instead the Curt TruTrack part # C17499 would be what you'd want. Hi Lynn, The Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # C17499 is rated for more than twice your trailer's GVWR so it would be too stiff to help you properly distribute the weight. The trailer's GVWR is 3,600lbs and your Santa Fe only has a 3,500lb towing capacity so you'd really need to minimize what you bring with you to avoid overloading its capacity.
