Will Curt TruTrack Shank Fit A Reese Strait-Line Wight Distribution System?

Updated 07/07/2025 | Published 07/06/2025

Question:

I have the Curt TruTrack 17499 and am looking to upgrade to the Reese Straightline as I have found my tongue weight exceeds the rating for the Curt. My question is can I use the shank and ball from the Curt and save a few dollars buying the Reese without those?

Great question, Jim!

The shank that comes with the Curt TruTrack weight distribution systems follows industry standards that the vast majority of weight distribution systems use. It will definitely work with a Reese Strait-Line.

With the capacities of the # C17499, I am guessing you are looking at the Strait-Line 12 lbs GTW, 1,200 lbs TW # RP66074? It looks like it would be the best option if you want a bit more capacity. I also really like the Strait-Line systems as they offer some of the best sway control out there.

What kind of trailer are you pulling and what are you pulling it with?

Thanks for the reply I have a 2022 GD Transcend 200 MK with a GVWR of 6995lb. I tow with a 2023 RAM 1500 4 door crew cab with tow package and 3.92 rear axle. My problem is the camper dealer sold us the Curt with the trailer and it’s realized for the dry weigjht, not loaded. Trips thru CAT scales shows we are just under 6900lb loaded and tongue weight 900-1,000 depending on how we’re loaded. So definitely want the higher capacity and some better away control. We do ok but there is a constant wiggle at times especially in windy environments. Jim

For the shank measurements you provided can you also compare the distance from the pin hole to the vertical hole patterns?

@JimM Most definitely! I can't add picture to comments yet (they are working on it), but I can tell you with the Curt (part # C17100), from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the vertical holes is exactly 8 inches. For the Reese I included in the picture (part # RP69FR), it will measure 9-1/2".

@LazerS I just noticed a different Reese product on your site RP75FR. It’s a little different with the Cams and is called “Dual Cam II”. Is it a newer design? Which would you recommend?

@Jimm The Dual Cam II # RP75FR is indeed the new design for the Strait-Line. I will admit to not having a lot of experience with it, but I have heard it is easier to install as there is no drilling needed (definitely a plus). One of the guys here uses it on his trailer and loves it and it still does a fantastic job of preventing sway. If you don't mind the ever so slightly higher cost, I would go with it. I would have mentioned it earlier, but I kinda forgot we had it.
