What is Total Weight of Curt Weight Distribution System C17499

Published 02/04/2025

Question:

You’ve specified the weight of the head. What would be the total weight of all components combined? I other words, I am looking to know the total number of pounds this system will add to my tow vehicles cargo carrying capacity.

Hey B, the total weight of the Curt weight distribution system part # C17499 is right at 100 lbs. Are you wondering if this counts against your tongue weight figure? If so, it does not as it essentially "becomes a part of the hitch" as Curt has told us.

Thanks Jameson. So the 96lb weight of the weight distribution system would need to be figured as part of the payload capacity of my tow vehicle?

@BH Oddly enough it does not need to get added as weight against your towing capacities.

@JamesonC But it needs to be calculated as part of my tow vehicles cargo carrying capacity, correct? I have a Toyota Sequoia with a maximum cargo carrying capacity of 1265 lbs. Supposing we load all of our gear in a travel trailer, then weight factoring into the CCC limit of 1265 would be: Passengers + Weight distribution hitch system + tongue weight < 1265. Is this correct?

@Bh Actually not. At least that is what the manufacturers of the systems will tell us when asked. I know it seems really odd. Basically it becomes part of the vehicle chassis and since it helps the vehicle carry the load safer and put less strain on the rear suspension it allows you to not have to factor it. Most of the time vehicles have a second set of higher towing capacities when using a weight distribution system.
