Torque Specs for a Curt Weight Distribution Hitch Ball

Published 10/17/2024

Question:

Considering the Curt weight distribution hitch. Would you install a ball with proper torque?

Expert Reply:

Curt recommends the use of 250 ft. lbs of torque when tightening the nuts on their hitch balls like # C40034. The general rule is for a 3/4" shank tighten to 150 ft. lbs, for a 1" shank tighten to 250 ft. lbs, and for a 1 1/4" shank 450 ft. lbs.

Thank you for your prompt response. You misunderstood my question. I was asking if you would install the ball on the hitch prior to shipping. Blue ox offers a weight distribution hitch with the ball already installed. I’m looking for a similar situation with the Kurt hitch. I would prefer the blue ox track pro but I have read reviews that there is a problem with porpoising because of the thin flat design of the bars can you please advise?

@GeorgeM George, none of the Curt WDS that you're looking at have the hitch ball already installed. You'd have to install one after. As far as porpoising goes with the Blue Ox TrackPro goes, I did read one person complain about it, but I haven't read anything else about it, so I assume it was an isolated incident.
