This item was one of many I needed to build a boat trailer for my 16 foot inflatable. COVID and supply chain issues made buying a market trailer impossible, so I decided to build one. I started with a suitable trailer with a fold down ramp, available locally. Then with the inspiration and instruction of many pictures on the etrailer site, I designed and assembled a custom built trailer with bunks, rollers, mounts, winch/stand, etc. with the parts sold here. The trailer worked fine for launching/retrieving the boat fully assembled. Thanks for your help!
Now all that's needed is more water in Lake Powell...

This thing towed terribly. If you need a long shank, it is a high quality product and is exactly what it says it is. That said, with my 4k lb trailer and half ton truck, it reminded me too much of towing with my old unibody v6 suv bc there was more leverage on the tongue and it rocked and bounced. Also, it totally changes the backing up experience. Again, the product is high quality, but I just realized the ability to drop my tailgate while hitched was not worth the impact to the towing experience.

I recommend to make sure the tongue weight of your trailer is not exceeding the 600 lbs tongue weight rating of the ball mount. You could also use a Roadmaster Quiet hitch part # RM-061
Roadmaster Quiet Hitch for 2" Trailer Hitches
to tighten up the connection between the ball mount and the hitch which may help eliminate some of the movement.

gets hitch out from under rear mounted spare tire.

If you have a trailer with a short tongue, like I do, this Hidden Hitch Extra Long Ball Mount is a big help! I bought a 2021 Nissan Frontier, which has a taller tailgate than the Tacoma I previously used, and found that when the tailgate was down so I could see to back my trailer to load my boat, that I only had about 2 to 2-1/2 inches of clearance between the tailgate and the winch mounting post, and I would damage the tailgate and/or winch post when making a tight turn. I went online to find a longer hitch mount, and found this one. Not only does it solve the problem, but the longer hitch mount actually makes the trailer easier to back than a regular mount! The only negative I have to say is that the hole drilled in the long mount for the pin to go through to secure it to the hitch receiver was drilled offcenter, and as a result it is not flush in the receiver and tilts the longer hitch mount at a slight sideways angle. This results in the trailer hitch catching on the ball when I go to raise it, and you it takes the force of continuing to raise the trailer to get the hitch off the ball.

This extended ball mount made it a lot easier to maneuver a 16 foot Airstream. The stock ball mount was pretty stubby and didn't allow for much wiggle room with backing up. And of course the added bonus is I can lower my truck tailgate while hitched to the camper that will come in handy when I install a truck tonneau cover.

I had to grind part of it off so it would fit into my receiver. The Hitch was too wide.

You mentioned that the hitch was too wide and I wanted to see if you could explain in more detail what happened.

I was looking for a hitch that would clear the spare tire on a 2022 full size Bronco. This is perfect for pulling my tritoon. Good price and great customer service.

Now I can open my tailgate!
It is also
easier to back up my trailers.

Great extension for my needs
more length to get farther away from my spare tire

Needed to extend the hitch on my side by side. This did just the trick. Now I have room to crank the tongue jack on trailers I want to hook up to. As always, Etrailer did an outstanding job on getting the part to me in a timely manner.

Working just fine.Thanks for asking.
Walt S - 08/16/2016

Worked perfectly. Bike rack in top receiver, ball mount in lower to haul kayak trailer.

Just what I needed for my 2020 GMC
Sierra tailgate clearance. Worked out great.

Still working out great
Robert - 05/08/2021

Attaching the trailer was easy and provided me a higher comfort level when backing up to center the ball under the hitch because I had more room between the coupling and my Tundra. Additionally this product provided me the ability to open my Tundra bed door while my trailer is attached. Lastly it provides me a greater turning radius when backing up. I would recommend this product.

This mount was just long enough for my bike rack to mount to and not interfere with the trailer wheel crank. The service from was excellent. Got the mount to me in record time and packaged to avoid any possible damage. I will definitely return for my other trailer needs to

I have a 2004 RAV 4 and I was trying to get my ball away from the spare tire carrier. I think I probably would have been fine with the next size (shorter) ball mount and still got the job done. The good news is that with the 2 inch drop, I can open the rear door and it just rubs the seal at the bottom of the door a little bit, but I can still easily open the door. I did not want to drop the ball any lower, So this works out well for my rig.

Fantastic product. No issues whatsoever so far after towing my travel trailer approximately 1,000 miles. It gave me the clearance I wanted to be able to lower my tailgate. Also upgraded to greater weight capacity travel trailer rims through etrailer, but that’s another story.

Still no issues. Provided the tailgate clearance I needed and moved the travel trailer further back from tow vehicle when backing up in the event that you jackknife. 100 satisfied!

Some pictures of the hitch in place. Works very well. Hauled a few trailers already with no issues. Very strong ball mount regarding its long length.

Delivered on time and as described. Bought for my utility trailer to avoid smashing my tailgate into the tongue jack. Works as it should and a better alternative than welding on a new piece to move the jack.

Ordered it so when our utility trailer was attached we could put the truck tailgate down.

Needed to clear the spare tire on my Jeep! This Hidden Hitch product was a perfecr fit!

I am very pleased with the product do not have to crawl under the Polaris to hook the trailers up anymore. Just what the Doctor ordered makes hooking up and unhooking so easy. I would give it five stars. Will be ordering again from etrailer. Thanks so much.

Super fast processing and shipping. Item was delivered less than 48 hours after placing order. Worked perfectly for providing needed clearance between trailer and spare tire on back of Jeep Liberty.

Perfect for my Chevy pickup with the tailgate down! Fast delivery!

With this long receiver, I can tilt my tailgate down without hitting my trailer jack stand.

  • Is the Tongue Weight Capacity of Ball Mount 80232 Reduced by 50 Percent Like Other Adapters
The Ball Mount Class III, # 80232, does not reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch. The tongue weight capacity of just this ball mount is 600 pounds. But you need to stay within the limits of your hitch and, ultimately, your vehicle. Check your owners manual to find the towing specifications of your 2009 Nissan Murano.

Hidden Hitch Ball Mount # 80232 measures 16 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole which is much longer than standard ball mounts. Provided that the tow bar you are using to tow the 2016 Fiat couples to a ball this is the best ball mount for your application. I have linked a video review of this ball mount for you.

  • Why Do Longer Ball Mounts Not Cut Hitch Capacity but Hitch Extenders Do
You are correct. I know it seems somewhat conter-intuitive, but an extended ball mount does not cut the capacity of the vehicle hitch yet a hitch extender does do that. Reason being the hitch extenders are typically much longer than the longer ball mounts and they have quite a bit more movement due to the two connection points. Those being the extender to the hitch, and the extender to the ball mount. The fixed ball mount # 80232 is longer at 16 inches from the center of the hitch pin...

For a ball mount that will give you a 2 inch drop and a longer extension, I recommend looking at the Hidden Hitch Ball Mount # 80232. This sturdy steel ball mount is compatible with 2 inch hitch receivers and provides either a 2 inch drop or a 3/4 inch rise. This unit also features an extra long shank that measures 15-3/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole. You can measure out this distance from the center of the hitch pin hole on your receiver to...

  • Extra Long Ball Mount to Allow for Clearance of Canoes on a Trailer
Using the 15 inch ball mount, part # 80232, is obviously the easier solution however it may not give you enough room. You're in need of at least 2 feet just to get the canoes on the trailer and that doesn't even count additional clearance for turning. If the trailer is fabricated in such a way as to raise the canoes and they can extend over the trailer hitch (such as over the bed of a pick up truck) then this might work for you. If that isn't feasible then extending the trailer's tongue...

  • Do Longer Ball Mounts Have Lower Towing Capacities
Typically the ball mounts that are longer or have large drops/rises have lower capacities than ones that are more standard in dimensions. This is designed to help take care of the capacity reduction question you mentioned since there isn't a hard and fast rule that applies for the scenarios you mentioned. For example, the Hidden Hitch ball mount part # 80232 that you mentioned has a capacity of 6,000 lb trailer weight and 600 lb tongue weight.

  • Longer Ball Mount Recommendation for Towing Trailer with Tailgate Down
For situations like yours the best solution is a longer mount to get the extra length since the use of a hitch extender cuts the capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. For example, check out the Hidden Hitch ball mount part # 80232 which has a drop of 2 inches and is 15-3/4" from center of hitch pin hole to center of ball hole.

  • Can Longer Hidden Hitch Ball Mount be Used to Increase Distance Between Trailer and Tow Vehicle
Yes, longer ball mounts like the part # 80232 that you referenced are designed to do exactly what you described. They add length to the distance between the hitch and the trailer. As long as you stay under the capacity of this ball mount you would be fine. This ball mount has a 6,000 lb capacity with a 600 lb tongue weight capacity.

  • Does Using Long Hidden Hitch Ball Mount part # 80232 Cut Capacity of Hitch at all
This is a very good question, but when you use a longer ball mount you do not cut the capacity of the hitch in half like what happens when you use a hitch extender. Reason being an extender adds quite a bit more length and leverage plus quite a bit more movement.

  • How Come Longer Ball Mounts Don't Cut Capacity Like Hitch Extenders
Officially the ball mount part # 80232 does not cut any of the hitches capacity due to it's length, but this is a very valid question. The biggest difference is the amount of movement a hitch extender introduces into the setup vs. a longer ball mount. While I can admit the rules of the hitch extender capacity are a bit fuzzy when you compare them to a longer ball mount that very well could be longer than the extender, but it's basically one of those things where a rule had to be made and...

  • Ball Mount and Ball Needed To Tow Utility Trailer with 2011 Toyota RAV4
In order to determine which ball mount you need you will need to take some measurements. Measure the distance from the top of your receiver opening down to the ground. Then with the utility trailer sitting on the jack so that it is perfectly level, measure the distance from the bottom of the coupler to the ground. The difference between these measurements is the amount of rise or drop you will need. If the receiver height is taller than the trailer coupler height, you will need a ball mount...

  • Will Extra Long Ball Mount Reduce Towing or Tongue Weight Capacity
The Hidden Hitch # 80232 ball mount will not reduce your vehicle's towing capacity like an adapter or extender will. The ball mount's max towing capacity is 6,000 pounds and its max tongue weight is 600 pounds. You should check the capacity of your hitch and your 2005 Jeep Liberty for their max capacities because the lowest rated component will be what determines how much you can tow.

  • How to Gain Clearance Between Vehicle and Trailer Load
There isn't a defined amount of distance you need to have between your tow vehicle and the kayaks on your trailer. You'll have the most issue while turning so I recommend testing to see how well they work in an empty parking lot or somewhere like that. To give yourself more clearance you can use a longer ball mount. The Hidden Hitch # 80232 measures 15-3/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole. This will help keep the kayaks further from you SUV...

  • Will Extra Long Ball Mount Allow Towing Travel Trailer with Tail Gate Down
The Hidden Hitch Super Extra Long 2-Inch Ball Mount # 80232 provides 15-3/4-inches from its hitch pin hole to the center of its ball hole. Without knowing the nature of the trailer's front (is it flat or tapered into a V-shape, for example) or your particular truck I cannot say for sure if you'll have enough turning clearance with your tailgate down. You can estimate this yourself by placing the unhitched truck and trailer near each other at an angle, to simulate a turn, and measuring...

  • Will Super Extra Long Ball Mount 80232 Decrease the Tongue Weight Capacity of a Trailer Hitch
No. Because ball mount # 80232 is not an adapter or extension, if used directly in the trailer hitch it will not decrease the tongue weight capacity enough (though it may decrease it only slightly) to be an issue. You will need to make sure that the combined trailer tongue weight, bike rack, and bikes does not exceed the 500 pound tongue weight capacity of the hitch. Also check the vehicle owners manual for its tongue weight rating and if lower go by the lower rating.

This allows changes in elevation like you mentioned to not cause you to risk hitting the tow bar on the bottom of the camper. • Towing with the 80232 extra long shank ball mount
There are many factors that go into determining a weight rating for a ball mount. The Hidden Hitch Ball Mount # 80232 for instance with having the extra long 15-3/4" ball mount to center pin hole will create more leverage on the receiver tube. The same way you use longer ratchets to make turning a bolt easier. That is one factor that a manufacturer has to consider when developing a ball mount. • Will Adding a Longer Ball Mount to Towing Setup Make Trailer Easier to Back Up
Going with a longer ball mount or a hitch extender will make backing up the trailer maybe slightly easier, but realistically it's not going to magically fix the issues you are having. Best advice is to try and line up the right angle you need to back up into while the vehicle is moving forward...
