Measure the cutout and check behind the panel for latch and depth clearance, and choose between key locks or thumb-turns to suit your setup.
Measure your current door and the cutout in the wall to match height and width. Check the outside flange size to be sure it covers the opening and any existing marks. If you're replacing an old hatch, compare screw-hole pattern since some replacements line up with existing holes. Dry-fit before sealing to verify clearance and alignment.
Installation is typically straightforward with basic tools. Plan your cut with careful measuring and marking, drill starter holes, and use self-tapping screws if needed. Use the included seal tape when provided or apply butyl tape to help keep water out. After mounting, check for a watertight seal and re-tighten or reseal if you spot gaps.
Pick the latch that suits how you use the compartment. Some doors come only with a key lock, while others offer a turn/thumb option. If space behind the panel is tight, check how far the lock body protrudes inside. If a key lock is included, verify how many keys you get and plan for copies—some keys can't be cut at big-box stores and may need a locksmith.
Confirm the door rigidity meets your needs and that the latch feels secure enough for the compartment's contents. If space is limited behind the panel, check inside depth since some locks protrude and can interfere. For higher security, consider how easily a simple latch could be forced and choose a latch style accordingly.
