Look for heavy-duty vinyl, sealed edges, and flap-covered zippers to help keep water out, and add an adjustable cable lock around the bag and basket to deter theft.
Some are promoted as waterproof and have kept gear dry in heavy storms, but no cargo bag is fully waterproof. Look for heavy-duty vinyl, sealed edges, welded seams, and a flap that covers the zipper to help keep water out. Make sure zippers are fully closed and avoid letting water pool on top; water can get in through the zipper if it sits there.
Wrap an adjustable cable lock around the bag and the basket to make grabbing it harder. Keep in mind the material could be cut. For the best theft protection, a locking roof cargo box offers more security.
Use the included tie-down straps if they fit your setup well, or use ratchet straps if you prefer that style. Attach to strong points on your roof rack, cargo basket, or ladder rack and cinch evenly around the bag. Check strap placement and tension after loading, and avoid dragging the bag across rough surfaces to keep the fabric in good shape.
Match the bag as closely as you can to your cargo basket. If you're deciding between sizes, going a bit bigger can work since it can be strapped down tighter.
