Question:
The Benton hitch carrier looks great, However, most states have limit as to how far items can protrude behind the vehicle without some sort of visual warning. I carry a red flagfoot in my pickup in case I need to carry something with the tailgate down, such as a ladder. It would be nice If Benton would have added lights on the rear of the carrier, either battery operated or connected to the vehicle lighting.

Hey Bob, glad to hear you’re liking the Benton Basic Hitch Modular Cargo Carrier # B42FR. You’re absolutely correct that many states have regulations regarding how far items can extend behind a vehicle and when additional visual warnings are required. Since the Benton carrier does not include integrated lighting from the factory, using a flag or auxiliary lighting is a smart and responsible approach when carrying longer.
At this time, Benton does have plans to develop a dedicated light kit for the carrier, along with several other accessories, but there isn’t a confirmed ETA yet. I did speak directly with Benton’s product development team, and adding lighting options is something they’re actively considering for future updates.
In the meantime, a universal solution like the Curt Auxiliary LED Indicator Lights # C53201 works very well. These lights connect to your truck’s 4-flat trailer connector and provide running, brake, and turn signal functions. They attach using 3M adhesive, making them easy to mount to the rear of the carrier or on a flat surface where they’re clearly visible, and they can be removed later if a Benton-specific kit becomes available.
As always, we recommend checking your local and state regulations to confirm lighting or flag requirements when carrying extended loads.

Hey Bob, I did purchase this cargo carrier and I found a light kit that kits perfectly. However I don’t believe etrailer sells this light kit but maybe etrailer could take some ideas from this kit and create their own (hint hint etrailer!) —— Nilight Truck Tailgate Light Strip 7 Inch Aluminum Frame

Mine came with 4 rear facing red reflective strips. I don't know what the Uniform Vehicle Traffic Code says and the states don't have to follow the UVTC. Per ChatGPT the UVTC has a 4 foot rule and requires red reflectors at night. I plan to carry 2 large plastic storage containers. It would be easy to add large peel and stick red reflectors to the back and yellow reflectors on the sides of the containers.
