Today, we're going to review part number 46365. This is the Hopkins Plug and Tow short-proof tail light converter. This converter will protect your tow vehicle and itself from any wiring shorts. It has a four-way flat connector right here which includes the dust cap for it. The spec on this is 8 amp capacity per function on this harness. Each kit will include everything that's needed to complete the four way flat installation. The kit includes the wiring harness itself, extra length of wire to run to the battery, an inline fuse holder, some wire connectors, a grounding screw, some dielectric grease, the dust cover for the four way, and some cable ties to take up any length of wire that might need to be ...

that keeps it from hanging down. What they do recommend is when you go to install this at the back of your vehicle, these wires do need to be tapped into the wires on your vehicle. It is recommended to use a circuit tester to test the functions of the wires. You don't always want to go by color so you always want to test the function to match them up correctly. This converter is a power converter, has circuit protection which is in a nice weather-proof double molded design. The circuit protection will guard the tow vehicle and the converter itself from any shorts.

If there is a short, it does reset automatically. The powered and tail light converters, they will tap into your tow vehicle's wiring system using this power wire and it draws the power for your tail lights directly from the battery. This wire is hooked up to your battery and it bypasses your expensive electrical components on your vehicle. Basically, when you go to hook this up, what you'll do is go to the back of your vehicle and then you'll tap into the tail light circuit. The yellow would be for your left turn or the driver's side tail light so using these connects you'd tap into the circuit. The brown would be for your tail light circuit.

The red is for your brake light circuit. The long green will run along to the passenger side and that's for your right turn or your passenger side turn signal. Then you have your white wire with the eyelet on it, that needs to be connected to a good clean group. Then, here's your four way on this end with a length of wire that will run out the back and plug into your trailer. When you're not using it, you can coil the wire up and put it in the rear of your tow vehicle. Again, they mention they do have the ...

I'm just going to put the four way on just to show you how that would work. Just put your four way cover on there. Then, when you're not plugged into the trailer, what you can do is just put your cover on. With your cover on, you can see it will protect those terminals from any damage or from the elements themselves. When you do make your electrical connections, they do recommend to use the dielectric grease to help resist corrosion. Wire connectors again are used to tap these wires in. Then on your last wire we have here that needs to be connected, we need to run to the battery. Basically, this is your power wire that powers the converter. What you'll need to do, it has a butt connector on it. You'll take this extra length of wire and tap it into there then run this length of wire all the way up to the front where your battery is. Then using the other end, you'll just attach that. You don't want to put this right to the battery first. You want to run it through the inline fuse holder. You'll attach it to that butt connector and then this other side of the wire on the inline fuse holder with the terminal on it, will connect to your positive battery post. If you notice, it comes with the included 20 amp fuse already in the holder. Then with that all connected, what you can do, is go back to your back of your vehicle, plug this into your trailer. Then it should power the lights on your trailer. That should do it for the review on part number 46365. This is the Hopkins Plug and Tow short proof powered tail light converter. .

This product worked perfect for one day. The second day we used it connected to a trailer it melted and almost caught on fire. I have not found any of these light adapters that work for more than a week but this one almost caught on fire. 679292

If you are consistently having issues with tail light converters, it sounds like there may be a short somewhere on your trailer or vehicle that is overloading the system. To check for a short, it is a good idea to check all of the wires running from your lights to the converter. Make sure they are not frayed or damaged and allowing the wires to touch bare metal on your trailer or vehicle. If you find any damage, replace or repair the wire to stop this wire short. Also, this converter does have a comparatively high amp rating at 8 amps per function. This amp rating would allow for more heat to build up in the unit before melting the circuits inside the converter.
