Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.


Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.


To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.


Unique Features of Blue Ox SwayPro

Unlike other weight distribution systems, the SwayPro has automatically locking brackets throughout. Both spring bars insert, slotted side up, into the head assembly and then lock securely in place. Removal is just as easy - simply lift the locking pins on the trunnions and slide the bars out. Blue Ox spring bars are interchangeable with each other. If you buy a new trailer or tow vehicle and you need to increase or decrease your capacity, you can simply buy new spring bars instead of purchasing a whole new system.

Other systems have lift brackets that require you to apply a good amount of leverage to get them to snap up, which can be difficult and frustrating. With the SwayPro, all you have to do is insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.


Another feature of the SwayPro is the easy-to-use head. The required pitch is already built into the head, so the only adjustment that may be needed is the placement of the head on the shank. Move the head up or down along the weight distribution shank to achieve the proper height. No additional, fine-tune adjustment is needed, which means no hard-to-access washers or difficult-to-use thumbscrew.

The SwayPro offers four points of built-in sway control. Within the head assembly, the trunnions are designed to hold the spring bars securely in position, placing just enough tension on them to cause them to constantly force your trailer in line. At the other end of this weight distribution system, the rotating brackets ensure that the lift chains are pulled as taut as possible. In addition, the basic design of the brackets keeps much of the length of the lift chains wrapped up inside of the brackets. Typically, only a couple of links hang down from each bracket. So each chain is held more stable than in traditional weight distribution systems, where more than twice as many links are exposed. This tight, stable design limits the movement of the spring bars so that they can exert more force on your trailer to effectively keep it from shifting side to side. Furthermore, unlike many friction-style sway controls, the SwayPro allows you to back up your trailer without having to remove or disengage the system.

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox Weight Pro weight distribution system, with built-in sway control. The unit is going to help evenly distribute weight over the axis of your tow vehicle and trailer for stability and control. Ultimately, a weight distribution system is going to create a level ride for both the tow vehicle and the trailer. This unit is going to feature built-in sway control. It's not anything separate. It's built into the weight distribution system.

That's really going to help do a great job at preventing trailer sway. We're going to have constant tension in the trunnions which is going to help force the trailer end-line at all times. That's a really nice design. We're going to have these rotating lift brackets that ensure that the chains are tight and secure to keep the spring bar from moving around. I also want to mention that unlike many friction style sway controls, the Sway Pro allows you to back up your trailer without having to move or disengage the system. Now these are spring steel bars.

These are going to flex for a nice controlled, softer, smoother, and quieter ride. They automatically lock in place and they easily remove from the head assembly. To remove it, all you have to do is lift up on this pin and the bars come right out. That's all there is to it. To get them installed, place it in, rotate it until that pin goes back down to lock them in place. A really nice and easy-to-use design.

A really nice feature of the Sway Pro that I really want to be careful to mention is that if you ever get a new or different trailer, you don't have to buy a new weight distribution system. All you have to do is purchase new spring bars that are rated for your new setup. All the other hitch components stay the same. They can stay in place, all you have to do is get new bars. These bars are marked with a dot system on the shank end to identify the weight rating. The bars that we're working with today have 3 dots on them which means that these bars are rated for up to 1,000 pounds.

Another neat thing about the unit is that you don't have any pins or clips to worry about or keep track of. We're going to have self-locking devices that function throughout the system. On the back of the head assembly where the bars go in, we're going to have grease zerks, one on each day. That's going to make maintenance simple and very clean. All the grease stays contained in the head assembly. No grease on the bars means no grease or no mess to clean up and getting on your clothes. That's a nice design too. If you've ever worked with a weight distribution system before, you'll notice that sometimes grease gets on the bars which can get other places as well. With this system it all stays contained so you don't have to worry about cleaning that up. I want to talk about the unique rotating lift brackets. These are going to be the components that actually connect the spring bars with the chains. They're very simple to use. All you have to do, once you have these mounted, and I'm going to talk about how they mount too. It's a no-drill installation with this system. You're going to have two sets of screws. Use whatever set works best for your application. If you have a thinner trailer frame, you'd want to use to the longer bolts right here or set screws. If you have a thicker trailer frame, you'd use the shorter ones to not take up as much space inside the frame setup on the trailer. Then it's going to have the jam nuts as well to make sure that those bolts don't back off and become loose. That's how they install. You've got the threaded portion back here. To get it set up you'd have this mounted onto your trailer frame. You pull this pin right here and then this whole bracket system rotates down, just like that. What that does is it puts it in a very convenient position to get your chains attached. There's a small groove in here where the link goes through and that's going to hold the chain firmly in place. Then all you have to do is one you get the chain installed, is you take the included tool, rotate the bracket until that lock pin engages and locks the system back in place. When you're ready to release or disengage, all you do is pull out on this pin here and then rotate it back down to disconnect the chains. Very, very easy system to use, very quick and simple. Again, the clamp-on design is a neat feature. It means that there's no drilling needed and that they're very low profile so that way they won't interfere with frame-mounted accessories. When it comes to the head assembly and getting the proper tilt, you don't have to worry about that with this system because the required pitch or tilt is actually built into the head assembly. No adjustment needed. All you have to do is find the correct placement along the adjustable shank to achieve the proper height. No additional fine tune adjustments are needed which means no more hard-to-access washers, thumb screws, cams or shim packs. This system eliminates all that because it's all built in. It's a steel construction. It's going to feature a really nice powder-coated finish on it. It's kind of got like a hammered texture so it's going to look nice for a long time, and it's going to do a great job at resisting rust and corrosion. The system is going to include everything that you see here on the table as well as a detailed owner's manual and set of instructions to help you get it set up in time. I've already talked about the hardware for the lift brackets. Chains are included. The attachment U-bolts here are included to the spring bars. You're going to get your hitch, pin and clip to get the unit secured inside of your hitch. The only thing that you're going to need that's not included is going to be your hitch ball. This hole right here is going to have 1-1/4" diameter. The hitch ball that you would choose a 1-1/4" diameter shank, unless you use the reducer sleeve supplied with the system. It goes in there and reduces that opening from 1-1/4" down to 1". When it comes to the towing-weight capacity, we're looking at anywhere from 750 lbs. to 1,000 lbs. with this system. Gross towing weight capacity is 10,000 lbs. This is designed to fit inside of a 2" x 2" trailer hitch receive that is rated for use with weight distribution systems. When positioning the lift brackets, you're going position these about 29" back from the hitch ball along the trailer frame. It's going to give you an idea where to place those. Then you can make any fine-tune adjustments before you get the set screws fully tightened down and all the way installed. That just gives you an idea of how far it's going to be back from the center of the hitch ball along the trailer frame. Now these lift brackets, they're going to fit trailer frame widths up to 2-1/2" and they're only going to take up about 4" along the trailer frame. This shank that it comes with is a really large shank. It has a lot of adjustment to it. It's going to have an 11-hole design which is really neat because it gives you a lot of adjustment. With the unit installed at the lowest setting with it in the rise position. Excuse me. Let's talk about maximum rise and maximum drop. Right now the shank is in the rise position. If I raise it to the highest setting, and take a measurement from the inside top edge of the receiver tube or the hitch or the top of the shank to the top of ball platform is going to give a maximum of 13". If I install it in the drop position, flip this over, move the head assembly to the lowest setting, it's going to give us a maximum drop doing those same measurements of about 7-1/2". These holes along the shank are going to be separated on center by 1-1/4". Again, this shank has an 11-hold design. I also want to mention the shank length. If we take measurements from the center of the hitch pinhole to the front of the shank, that's going to give a measurement of 11" from the center of the hitch pinhole to the center of the adjustment holes is going to be 10". Then from the center of the hitch pinhole to the back of the upright bar here, that's going to be 9". This product is made right here in the USA and it's going to be covered with a limited lifetime warranty. I’m not very happy with my purchase. The weight distribution hitch I purchased does not fit on my trailer. There is a welded support bracket right where the hitch bracket is supposed to go 29 inches back on my trailer. Can the bracket go further back or does it need to go right above the chain? Yes this blue ox weight distribution system part # BXW1006 does require the brackets to be positioned 29 inches from the hitch ball. Since you have a support bar where the bracket does need to be positioned this weight distribution system will not work for your trailer. I recommend the equalizer system part # EQ37100ET

I love the Blue OX. Much easier to use and maintain than the Equalizer, which is what I had previously. I think the BO is equal in effectiveness at sway control to the EQ but not sure because I'm now pulling a bigger trailer. The cam latch system with the BO is easy to use but you must raise the trailer tongue "to the sky" in order to release the tension from the load bars before releasing the chains. The load bars will slam down if you're not careful creating a hazard if you're not careful. 496829

Have used the SwayPro for 1 year now and overall very satisfied. I tow a 23' Airstream which weighs about 5500 lbs. The receiver hitch mount that comes with the SwayPro was unable to get the ball low enough as instructed in the Install Instructions so I gave Blue Ox a call and they immediately shipped out the one I needed and I shipped them the original. The BO SwayPro is fairly easy to operated and is quiet. I will say that it does not eliminate sway, I have tried several different adjustments but anytime I drive above 65mph, especially in headwinds or gusty conditions, sway is possible. The sway is manageable by slowing and never gets too bad but it will make you grip the steering wheel tighter. I was not surprised by this, just had a hard time shelling out the $2500 needed for the non-swaying hitches. 407456

The Blue Ox is performing fine, it does not eliminate sway but as long as I drive 65 mph or less, sway is rarely an issue. As you go over 65 sway can happen with adverse winds, semis passing, or poor road conditions. One other nuisance, is when I attempt to disconnect the chain on the right side, the chain sometimes gets wedged in the metal channel that you rotate and will not release. Usually I have to spray the area with a lubricant and then rotate the whole “chain engaging device” back and forth and the chain will become unstuck so that I can get the bar off. All else is fine, sometimes I do wish I had bought the Pro Pride but that seems a bit too complicated, heavy and expensive.

Finally got around to installing the Blue Ox Sway Pro hitch with bolt on chain latches. The process was straight forward after viewing youtube vids, taking time to be sure all my measurements were correct. With the bolt on chain latches you do not get many chances to get it right. I could not use clamp on as my V-nose RV did not have room above the frame to clear the clamp on latch.. drilling was a pain as clearances on my frame were tight and I had to go around a electrical junction box on the inside of the frame.. but once on, it was a breeze to set up. The overall quality of the hitch was great and I don't miss having to set the angle of the hitch head (it's fixed) making the only adjustments necessary was hitch height and chain length. I initially set mine up using 9 links on the chain, but once I got out on the road, I noted the RV was riding nose low so I went up to 10 links on the chain. Now the truck and RV are level, the truck rides and handles as I expected. I have not had the rig out on a long haul, so I can't comment about the sway control of the hitch.Truck is a 2013 Ford F150 ecoboost, max tow 3.73 gears, rv is a 6600lb (empty) V-nose 25ft toy hauler. I like the chain latch set up. Easy to use especially on a V-nose trailer. The concept of sway control with the short length chain is feasible and after this week trip (with some interstate time), I will report back if it doesn't work as advertised. All in all I am happy with the hitch and of course happy with the eTrailer purchasing process. 102170

Have only used it to drive 15 miles from my trailer dealer to home, but I think I'm going to like this WDH. It seems to do the job, is relatively easy to use. The dealer I bought my trailer from mounted it for me, they'd done many before so it went quickly. Some hints I'd learned from them and discussion forums - use the trailer jack to lift the front of the trailer/back of the truck to make it easier and safer to install or remove the chains. Use a long breaker bar with a 1" socket for the same reason - the extra leverage over that with the tool supplied with the hitch helps. I painted the chain link on each side that the dealer hooked to so I could get the tension back the way they had it. Will have to see how that works out in the long run, may have to adjust up or down. FWIW, I measured the distance from the ground to the top of the front and rear fender wells on my truck before and after hooking up the trailer with the BO Sway Pro. The front ended up exactly where it was before, the rear dropped only one inch with 1000 lbs of hitch weight. I'd say the WDH is doing its job! 462535

Only snag we are running into is that the u-bolts that hold the chains to the arms are being bent and worn down from occasional ground scrapes. Ive purchased a pair of the little u-bolts and four self locking nuts from e-trailer, so Ill be prepared if they ever do rub or break off completely.

The BEST Purchase I've made thus far!! Once I installed the new hitch system I can honestly say it made a 100% difference! I have a Mercedes ML500 and I pull a 17' Forest River Wildwood X-lite travel trailer. There is no more sag in the middle, both tow vehicle and trailer are level driving down the road and my SUV handles almost as if there is no trailer on the back! Still The BEST Purchase Ive made thus far for my trailer! Now that I have used it multiple times, I can say its a life saver in so many ways. My tow vehicle is stable on the road, breaking, maneuvering, the weight distribution has been key for me with a smaller set up and the Blue Ox continues to deliver. I have both an Equalizer and this Blue Ox hitch. I purchased the Blue Ox after I complained of a poor ride with my travel trailer to the dealer. They recommended Blue Ox instead. Frankly it didn't improve the ride at all. Worse, the bars hung so low that they scraped on every speed bump. However this was exacerbated by the way I had to set it up to make the ride at least tolerable. I have now changed travel trailers and tried both hitches on the new one. The new travel trailer sits significantly higher and rides much better. I don't have the problem of the bars hitting the ground. The ride also seems much better then when I use the Equalizer. The final problem I have with this hitch is the that saddle that holds the chains seems to stick very frequently and requires that I release the pin and force it to release the chain with the provided wrench - resulting in frequent minor injuries. Not sure why this happens but I'm getting better at forcing the release with no injuries. Just irritating. 289769

No regrets as this hitch has been an easy to setup and use and it seems to do it's job nicely. Bought the Sway Pro to replace a hitch that had separate sway control. The Blue Ox works better on the road as trucks pass us and I really like backing up without loosening the sway friction. This Blue Ox WDH does not come with a ball. Had to have U-Haul tighten the 50mm nut on the 2 5/16” ball. Odd torque value for the hitch bolts too?
