Video Transcript for Rhino-Rack Nautic 581 Rear Loading Kayak Carrier Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Rhino Rack Nautic 581 Rear-Loading Kayak Carrier: part number RR581. The Rhino Rack Nautic 581 allows you to conveniently carry one kayak on the roof of your vehicle. It installs in seconds with no tools or drilling required. It uses the channel on your crossbars to slide in, and has locking covers to protect your carrier from getting stolen. The carrier is compatible with all roof rack system that feature a bar channel, and all the straps are included to carry one kayak on the roof of your vehicle. Now I'll go ahead with installation. To begin our installation, we'll need to first remove the rubber stripping in the top of our rails.

Now starting here up at our front rail, we're going to take the front part of our carrier and assemble it. The front part are the cradles with the rubber protective padding. We'll use the included tool to loosen up the lock to remove the blocking cover. Doing this will expose the hand knob, which will allow you to loosen up the T-bolt to be able to fit the T-bolt in the slot. We'll loosen this up and fit it into the slot of our bars.

We'll now remove the end cap from our front rail to position the cradle in place. Now when you slide the cradle into the channels of your bar, you want to make sure that when the cradle is angled down, that your knob has a lot of room so that you can reinstall your locking cover. Now with both cradles in place, we're going to want to keep our knobs loose so that we can adjust the distance to fit the width of our kayak. Now here at the rear bar is going to have the soft felt padding. This is going to allow you to easily glide up the kayak from the rear of your vehicle, and placing it on top of your roof. We'll then repeat the same process as we did for the front part of the carrier.

Notice that the knobs on both the rear set and front set of the cradles are facing the outside walls of the vehicle. Now we're going to go ahead and roughly adjust the width of the cradles to fit the width of our kayak. When we establish the estimated width, we're going to then tighten down the hand knobs to secure the cradles in place. Now we're not going to reinstall our locking covers, as we're probably going to have to adjust the width of our cradles to fit the kayak. Now as you can see, when tightening down the hand knobs, the T-bolt is going to come up tightly against the top portion of the bar, creating a strong hold. Now once you have fit the cradles in place and adjusted them, you can then replace your rubber stripping, cutting off the excess where your cradles will rest.

This will help the bars stay silent when you're traveling down the road, and helps you prevent the air from hitting the channels and whistling. Now we'll go ahead and place our kayak up onto the cradles and adjust the width of our cradles. With the kayak up onto our cradles, it looks like I estimated the width pretty well, so now we're just going to continue to tighten down the hand knobs. We can then replace our locking covers on both the bars and on our cradles. Now up here at the connection point of the bottom part of the cradle and our bar, you can see that there are slots here on the inside where these tabs are going to fit into. Then close the cover. Then using the included key, lock the cover in place. With the cover locked, this is going to prevent your carrier from getting stolen. We're going to repeat the process for all three of the other cradles. Now with our kayak all loaded up onto our cradles, we're going to go ahead and use the included straps to secure our kayak to the vehicle. We'll take the straps to go around the underside of our rear bar, and go around the kayak. We'll then take the other end and loop it around the bar, and bringing it back up to the buckle. The cam buckle is hidden in this protective padding to help prevent your kayak from getting scratched up. We'll insert the end of the strap into the cam buckle and pull it tight. We can then pull behind that protective padding to cover our buckle. With the rear strap in place, we'll go ahead and repeat the process for the front strap. With both of these straps installed, we'll go ahead and secure the bow and stern of the kayak with the included bow and stern tie downs. We'll go ahead and find a sturdy steel anchor point on the underside of our vehicle here at the rear to bring our strap around. We'll then bring the end up to the kayak, put it through the loop, and secure it with the cam buckle. We'll stick the end of the strap into the cam buckle and pull it tight. With the strap tight, we can go ahead and secure the excess slack. Now we'll go ahead and repeat the same process for the front of the vehicle. Now be careful up here at the front, as the buckles don't have any protective coating to protect your paint's finish. So we're going to go ahead and wrap a towel around it to protect our paint from getting damaged while we're traveling down the road. Now with our kayak all loaded up and all of our straps secured, we'll go ahead and take it for a test drive to show you how it looks driving down the road. That will complete today's review of the Rhino Rack Nautic 581 Rear-Loading Kayak Carrier: part number RR581. .

Racks are similar to the Thule glide-n-set, which is probably one of the best saddle designs for the Native Ultimates that I like to paddle. I like the locking covers and adjustments. Makes things easy on the Rhino Vortex bars. 578115

I've been using this product for the past year to carry my 10 foot pelican kayak, and is has done the job without any problems. The pads and provided tie-downs hold the kayak securely. Its easy to load the kayak by myself by sliding the kayak onto the holders from the rear. I also appreciate that it comes with a lockable plastic cover over the wing nut to deter would be thieves. This is a great product, and a great value compared to its competitors. 414372

Its been another year, and the carrier is still working great. When you get the holders in the right position, the kayak stays secure

I use the RR581 to carry my 11.5', 75 lb., kayak. It's quite easy to slide the kayak into the carrier with the aid of a boatroller that attaches to the car with suction cups. The kayak is held on the carrier with four straps (included with the carrier). I'm quite happy with this purchase. 572676

A year later and this kit is working fine. If you have a sit-on-top Kayak, these don't work very well, unless you really crank down the tension on the straps...not good for the kayak. We wound up flipping the kayak over and carrying it upside down. This seems to work well, but would be MUCH better with two of the rear felt holders instead of the front rubber holder. The felt holders go nice and snug up against the side of the kayak. I'd buy a second set of the rear holders, but Rhino doesn't sell just the rear holders. 405838

The product was as advertised and delivered promptly. It doesn't fit my kayak as well as I had hoped but it will work with the included straps. 329416

Bought a Rhino Rack cross bar and kayak carrier. Contacted etrailer by phone to confirm the fit to my vehicle. Very helpful individual who let me know what was in stock. Both items were delivered in one week. Easily installed with very clear directions. Videos instructions on the web site are available and helpful. Insalled the items and used them the next day to haul my kayak on a 700 mile round trip with no issues. I would certainly use etrailer again. 196695
