Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Firestone Ride-Ride air spring components

Air Spring Construction

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Video Transcript for Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs Installation - 2006 Ford F-150

Today on our 2006 Ford F-150, we're going to take a look at show you how to install the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs. These are the double convoluted airbags for the rear axle. Part number is F2350. Here you can see our Firestone airbags once they're installed. These mount between your vehicle's axle and the frame of the vehicle to help increase your safe load handling capacity. Now it's not going to increase over the manufacturer's recommended carrying capacities, but it helps you to travel safer, it's going to make your vehicle more stable, going to help it to handle better. They're going to help increase the tire wear, and even level out your headlights.

What happens is when we get a big load here in the rear of the truck, our suspension sags, that increases the angle that we've got on the front, and can sometimes even take some of the pressure off of our front tires, which will reduce our braking ability. They also do an excellent job of taking any of that excess stress and excess strain off of our factory leaf springs by helping out and keeping that overload situation from occurring as you're traveling down the road. These things have great reviews. As far as the Firestone Ride-Rite airbags go, 150-160 reviews at the time of shooting, and it's a five-star rated product. Another very, very important fact about the Firestone Ride-Rite airbags, which we can't say about the other brands of airbags that we carry is that let's say you take this to just a standard tire shop to get a balance and rotate. If they don't know a whole lot about airbag setups, they could just lift your truck right up, let the axle hang, which with most airbags, is going to pull the seal out.

With the Firestone Ride-Rite airbags, these have been designed, it came right from the mouth of one of our Firestone representatives, that these are built at a superior level than most of the airbags on the market with the crimp they use here at the top, it's actually able to support our axle weight. We could lift this just in our garage, we could take a jack, lift up from the frame or wherever, if we're going to try to get both wheels off the ground, lift up from our receiver hitch, and we won't have to worry about pulling those out. Now we're going to go over a couple of measurements that just help us determine exactly what kind of goal we're going to have for after we have our airbags in. We're going to start by getting our factory ride height, which is measured from the ground to the inside edge of the bed there. Looks like we've got about 38-7/8" in the rear. Then in the front, about 36-1/2".

Let's write those down. Now we've got about 100 gallons of water that we're going to be adding into the truck, and you'll see as he lowers that down in, we're going to go from that 39 down about 36-1/8", and our front one has gone up almost a full 1/2" to 36-7/8". You just want to add in a little bit at a time, and then monitor it as you go. When we first loaded our truck down, our factory ride height, we had it at 38-7/8". Once we've put the water in it, it went all the way down to 36-1/8". Now with just five to ten pounds of air in each bag, we've already been able to move up to about 37", so we've already gained about 3/4", about 7/8" here.

Let's go ahead and put a little more pressure in our airbags, and get it right back to our factory height. You can see we're right there, just about perfect. 38-7/8". Looks like it was about half the bag's maximum capacity, so we've got about 125 gallons of water that we've loaded in the back, initially took us all the way down to 36-1/8". We're back now at 38-7/8", right back at that original factory height, and we're only using about half the capacity of our bags to support that. We've got a range on the bags from 5 PSI all the way up to 100. As for the front, we started at 36-1/2". Once we put our load in, it came up almost a full 1/2" to 36-7/8" with the load releveled in the book. It looks like we've improved by about 1/4", as well. We're now about 36-5/8". Going to give us more pressure on those front tires to give us better braking force and more even wear. Essentially, what you're going to have is the heart of the system, it's our double convoluted airbag. We're going to have our upper and lower brackets, axle strap, spacer plate, we've got our carriage bolts, all hardware is going to be included here. Even provided us with a bracket that mounts right on to the hitch that we can run our air nozzles into, and a heat shield that we'll need to put right around the exhaust system. We've got the airline that's going to run to each airbag independently so we can control that load side to side. You're going to have two options when it comes to how you want to do this installation. What we do here at E-Trailer is lower the spare down and lift the car up in the air. That gives us the room underneath we need to work. As an alternative option, you could raise your truck up, put Jack stands under each axle, lower it down, remove your tires, and approach it from the outside it. We're going to be able to see better from underneath the vehicle, so it will give you a better idea of exactly what we're doing. We're just going to lower this spare down, set it out of the way. Last thing we're going to do is put it back in. What we're going to do is remove our inaudible 00:06:37 stop here to start. We're going to use just a little bit of spray lubricant to hit that bolt in there just to help it come out. We're just going to take a socket right up inside of that stop, there will be a nut, and let's remove it. It may actually be a bolt, rather, I'm sorry. All we have to do with that is just return it to the customer. We do want to be sure that that C clip stays into place, though. Now we'll do the same thing here on our passenger side. Really, everything we do here on one side, it's going to get repeated on the other side with the exception of right here on this exhaust, we're going to be adding a heat shield in. Now we're going to start with our lower bracket assembly. As you can see on our outermost set of holes here, we've got one inside, one outside. We've already placed through our two 5-1/2" carriage bolts, and since we are in the four-wheel-drive application as we had touched on before, we're going to be adding the small bracket on that uses two of the 1" by 3/8" bolts. The thing I like about the kit, everything is a flange nut so we're not dealing with washer, lock, washer, and trying to get everything on. Let's get that into place here, tighten that down. Torque those down to the specifications. Remember, those are going to be on top of our airbag. Now we're going to take the small 3/8" by 3/4" bolt that has the orange Loctite on it, and that's going to go right in the bottom of the airbag. See our threaded hole there We can torque that one down, as well. All right. That takes care of the lower portion. Let's let that sit while we take care of our upper. Now we've got our upper bracket to get put in place. You can see here we've got a beveled hole, that flat headed Allen bolt is going to go right into that. The L indicates driver side, so we'll place this up. Basically, we're just going to line up the hole here with the hole our inaudible 00:09:36 stop came out of. As you can see, it's a little bit of a tight fit here, so we'll just tap that up into place. Let's go ahead and get that tightened down. Since that was a tight squeeze, basically what we've got is a little bit of rust and a little bit of corrosion that's just caused that metal to just expand slightly. We just want to be sure we really get this tapped up there into place where it belongs. We'll torque it a couple of times to be sure that we've got it all the way up nice and flush. Now we're going to bring the preassembled lower bracket and bag in, and we're just going to work it into position here, compress that bag inaudible 00:10:52 get up there. We want to be sure that we're pushed in flush up against that's the block I was talking about, now we're just going to loosely install our axle strap here. All right, and then, also, let's bring our bail clamp around the back side. It's also going to come like that, and it gets two flange nuts, as well. There we go. We've also got the large 5/8" nylon locking nut, and that will get threaded right on top there. Now we'll secure our airbag's lower clamp here with the bail first. All right. Now we'll torque that down to specification. Now we'll get this lower axle strap tightened up. Just like on the other one, we'll try to go back and forth and do it pretty evenly. Then we'll torque those down. You can see here, as we tighten that down, we get a little bit of deflection from our bolts. It's not a big deal, that's something that happens just about every time we do these airbags. You'll see that just draw out a little bit on each side, nothing to be worried about. Now we'll go ahead and tighten down the nylon locking nut that we had, and we really want to be sure that that small tab that sticks up lines up with that hole. Now we're just going to tighten that down snug, there's no torque specification with it, and with it being a nylon locking nut, we won't have to worry about it backing out. Now we're going to take our little air nozzle fitting, our air line fitting, and that's going to go right in the top. Now we want to be sure that we get plenty of that orange thread sealant in there, and gauged into the top of our bolt. All right. That looks great. Essentially, our airbag is installed, we've got everything torqued down. We're ready to add a couple of air lines, that it will be ready to go. What we'll do is knock that passenger side out, and then we'll take a look at how to route those air lines. Here's the heat shield. What we're going to do is take the two center tabs, bend them all the way in 90 degrees, just like that, and then right in the middle, bend them back out. That will then give us the perfect spot for those band clamps to go on. We'll bring it up like that, bring our clamps up on each side, snug them down a little bit. All right. Get it positioned there where we want it, and tighten it on down. You can see, heat shield is installed nice and secure, and that will give our airbag plenty of protection. Now if we choose to, we can just leave these hang there, not going to interfere with anything, or just take a pair of shears and trim them off, which we're going to do. Now if you do trim them off, it's not a required step, but take a pair of side cutters or needle nose or something, you can just rotate that around a little bit, that way you won't have that sharp edge stick out. Right now, we'll route our air line up. Just take one of the ends. We're going to ultimately end right back here on the receiver, so we're going to bring it right up over top. Anytime you can go over the top of supports, you're going to be in better shape. That way, you don't have anything that's going to come hanging down. Run this right up here where we want it by our fitting. Now we want to have a nice, flush end. We're going to use a tubing cutter here, trim that off. As you can see, it's nice and flush. If you don't have a tubing cutter, we carry them here at E-Trailer. Part number is F9009. I'm going to route it up here for my final little point, and then that will give us a nice bend to where we can come down. This is going to slide right into that fitting, we push it all the way in, and then we want to pull on it in and out a few times to make sure it's seated really well. With that in place, we'll use a couple of the provided zip ties and secure our air line. I'm just going to secure it right to the wire loom that we followed up. That will give us plenty of support, keep it up out of the way, trim off any excess as we go. Now when we route this, of course, it's going to hold air, so we want to avoid any sharp areas, any moving parts, or any significant sources of heat. All right. Now let's come over here, we're going to be mounting our inflation bracket right here on the underside. Let's give ourselves a nice little coil so we have some extra in case we ever need to make any kind of changes, and we'll make a nice, flush cut on that, as well. All right. Now we'll take that in over to our passenger side. We're going to route it up just like we did this side. A really cool thing that comes with the Firestone airbags is going to be this inflation bracket. A lot of times, you've got to drill a hole through the back of the car to get them mounted but with this included, it works out great. It's going to work on a square, kind of oval, round, it doesn't matter what type of hitch you use. Going to bring one of our zip ties down through the bracket, up around our hitch, place that in, just give it one click for now, do the same thing with the other one here. Rotate it right there where we want it, and then we'll just snug down our zip ties. You can see that bracket is nice and firmly mounted there, not going to be something we'll have to worry about. Just trim off our extra. Now the inflation valve consists of five pieces. We've got our end cap, our nut, the two washers you can see, and the valve itself. We're going to pull off all but one of the washers, slide that right up through our bracket, put our other washers back on, and then our nut. We'll tighten that down just a little bit and we can mount our other one in place, as well. You can see our capture there to help keep any dirt and debris, things like that, from getting in. Then they've also got the valve stem remover right there on the end so you could rotate that over and unscrew the stem itself that sticks down in, allowing you to rapidly release the air pressure in the bags. All right. Now let's get our air lines hooked up and we'll run our test. Now our excess, we're going to tuck up here and get it out of the way, so we won't have to worry about it. I ran out of zip ties, so I used just a couple we had here at the shop. We're going to use that just to keep them up nice and tidy there. That way, we don't have too much hanging down. All right. That's all there really is to the installation. We'll just be careful when we're putting our spare tire back up that it doesn't grab and pull on those, because it may make a little bit of contact, and that's fine. It's rubber against plastic, not a big deal. we just want to make sure that it's not going to pull this up or that it's not going to cause any kind of issues like catching and pulling our air lines out. Now we're going to fill our airbags up to about 30 PSI. Now we'll spray all four down, and make sure we don't have any bubbles start popping out, indicating that we've got a leak. All right. Now let's just give it a couple of minutes and see what it does. All right. With it verified that we have no leaks, we're going to go ahead and reduce these down to the minimum pressure of 5psi, and then we can cap them off. For normal everyday use, we'll just leave five pounds of air in the bags that keeps them working, keeps them flexing. That way, they'll last a really long time for us. Now that we can see the ride improvement, that's going to complete today's installation of the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper springs, the double convoluted design for the rear axle, part number F2350 on our 2006 Ford F-150 4x4. .

Shipped fast, easy to install. We installed the filler valves by the rear door so they would stay clean and be easier to raise and lower. Larger tubing then the brand I had in the last truck, easier to work with. Good, solid looking bags, more time will tell but I think I will be very happy. 696774

I can now keep the truck from sagging even when loaded down with ladders and heavy equipment. I installed it myself in a couple hrs. I love that I can still jack the truck up by the frame without worrying about tearing the bags. this helps me get the most out of my truck 551045

I should have done this sooner, super easy to install and only took me 2hrs from start to finish. I hooked up my 6k travel trailer added the WD bars and placed 45 psi in the bags, ride height was restored. Traveled down the road and could hardly even tell that I had a trailer on the back. Would recommend highly to anyone that hauls/tows a lot. 512373

These airbags are great. Good quality. Took me longer to install than the time listed but it wasn't too difficult. The bags really help with weight and there is a very noticeable difference with them. I haul a lot of trailers around and these bags do everything they are supposed to. 132161

I have received Ride-Rite, and gone through the box everything seems to be built from high-quality materials. It wouldn't be fair to write an accurate review until I install the Ride-Rite. So until this happens,s I can't say. But I can say is, that two of my friends have the Ride-Rite system on their trucks, and love them, plus having nothing but good things about the system. That why I brought one for myself. Once I put the system on, I will come back and post a full review. 559190

We’ve had the airbags on for several trips now and love them. Our cousin was impressed so they had a set installed with the onboard compressor. I have always carried an air compressor with me so I didn’t install one. Our 5th Wheel has a much gentler bounce over rough terrane, and unhitching and hitching up is a little nicer now. Great product. 672981

They work perfect. Due to my truck coming with the factory installed Puck System, it was the only to go for installation. Other systems required a bracket to go up and over the frame which in not possible with factory installed hitch system. They perform perfectly as I like to have a little more support when hauling my fifth wheel camper and gooseneck trailers. 609449

They work great, one issue I have is there is a small leak somewhere, I have to air the bags up about every 10 days, no big deal that gives me a chance to get under the truck and check for other issues, I like the product , easy to install

In checking for leaks we recommend using a spray bottle with some soapy water, and I would start your leak inspection at any of the connections points (to the bag, or at the fill point), and then the rest of the lines.

Review from a similar Firestone Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Just Installed the new Ride Rite Airbags on my new 2019 Silverado High Country 3500 SRW. This is my 3rd set of Ride Rite Bags. I've had these air Bags on a previous 2008 GMC HD 2500 and a 2013 GMC Denali 3500 Dually. I have a heavy Toy Hauler Fifth Wheel and these Airbags are a must have. I have about 3500 LBS on the Pin and with about 60 PSI in the bags it brings me back close to factory ride height and gives a much nicer ride than without. The bags bring you back up off of the overload springs so it rides much smoother and the other added benefit is that your headlights are pointed correctly so you are not blinding the oncoming vehicles and constantly getting flashed. As to the installation I had my 2 previous sets installed at a shop. This set I decided to do myself after watching the install video and reading the supplied instructions. It was pretty simple I took my time to make sure I had each step correct and It took about 3 hours to complete. I think now that I have done it I could cut that time in half. Best choice for handling a heavy load I highly recommend them! 638023

Product is well engineered but difficult to install doing to the limited room. The disc that goes into the joust bumper holder needs to be looked at. the joust holder has a radiused upper edge while the disc has a square corner. a radius had to be ground on the upper edge of the disc to get it to fit. Other than this all parts fit well, brackets lined up. Kit was put on a 2015 silverado 2500hd 6.6 liter duramax. definitely a 2 man job due to the limited access. overall a good product 224103

after using for a year my only comment would be the slow air leaks I have. Have been unable to find them to date but not a deal breaker

Product arrived quickly. These air helper springs look very well made. They were relatively easy to install. The difficulties I had were related to the equipment and tools I had (or didn't). I only had hand tools. So the install took a lot longer than suggested. All the parts fit and matched up without interfering with any parts on the vehicle. We'll see how they stand up to use over time. 227862

Simple to install, took my time, the brackets of my 5th wheel did not prevent me from installing it, there was room between the custom bracket and my frame, so if you have a Silverado 2012 with custom brackets check to see if you have nearly 1/2 an inch clearance, than you can use this item. Suggestion to etrailer, re-box the item, reinforce the box to ensure that the box and items are not mangled in shipment. the box was a mess, had been re-taped some time along the shipment line, freaked me out where I had to inventory everything and really check for damage, especially the hose, part of it was not serviceable and I had to ensure that I did not use that section which was right in the middle of the hose. Other than that, I am happy with it. 52628

Great product. But they should have an option if there is a lift in the truck to make the bottom bracket longer if needed. 555352

The air bags are the second purchase for this product for two different Toyota trucks in three years. I chose etrailer because they are thorough, always right and provide excellent customer service. The bags worked well with my bumper pull last year at around 20 psig and now with our new fifth wheel at 55 psig. Both sets of Firestone bags have been excellent. The Toyota Tundra pulls our Grand Design very well. We drove from South Carolina to New Mexico with no problems and a smooth ride thanks to etrailer and Firestone! 409027

The Firestone Ride-Rite vehicle suspension system is excellent. It allows me to easily increase the air pressure to compensate for camper tongue weight and lower pressure for a soft ride when no tongue weight exists. The installation at etrailer was superior as always. Outstanding company to do business with. 432066

So far, I would give this product a 5 star rating. I must say, the installation directions from Firestone are a bit lacking. However, the installation video from etrailer made the installation a snap. I completed the installation in about 3 hours. I'm confident these Ride Rite bags will improve my hauling and towing performance when I go on long fishing trips fully loaded with gear and pulling my 19 foot boat. Also, etrailer was as good as their word when I asked them to honor their price pledge. 505966

Perfect fittment on a 2014 Toyota Tundra. Very easy install and very easy to use daily. I have a small 12V compressor I keep in the truck to adjust pressure. I normally run about 12psi in the bags. 319941

I installed this on my 93 Chevy Z71 shortbed about one year ago and it is working great. The short wheelbase allows for more strength but the hwy springs are too soft for heavy loads. This airbag system allows me to haul a full load of wood on my 10k trailer and the pickup bed loaded as well. I carry a hand air pump in the toolbox to adjust the air bags whenever needed. This suspension mod allows me to haul maximum loads out of the woods and makes for a smooth and safe ride on the Hwy. 316278

Yes, as long as the truck was not originally built as a Cab and Chassis model, the part # F2025 air sping kit will fit.

I purchased a Ride Rite kit for my 06 Ram. This is my third kit for my trucks. I haul scrap and routinely gross 30K. I need quality running gear. etrailer provided what I needed at a great price and fast. I also needed a replacement air bag for my 2012 Ram. I found it cheaper from a competitor. Rather than order it from that vendor I gave etrailer the info and they matched the price plus a little extra. This is where I shop, and so should you. 551930

Running a 1300 pound truck camper in a Ram 1500, with 30 psi, the truck handles like nothing is there. Had it semi off road with no issues. The only pain was the install due to having to drill the frame, but other than that I have no complaints. 617058

Kit cam quickly and the instructions were clear enough if you are mechanically inclined. If your not then don't try this because you need to have a good safe way to raise you vehicle pull the wheels off the back and work under for a couple hours. That being said once installed on my 2016 Tacoma the performance was excellent. I am currently running about 12 psi. And the hitch is about 1 1/2" higher with no load. Hooked onto my mower trailer with mower and it handled it as easily as my 2500HD. Mower is a JD 27hp 60" zero turn commercial. Haven't hooked the camper up to it but this definitely made the towing on my Taco much better. Great addition to any smaller or 1/2 ton truck that needs some beef in the back. Truck will be safer to handle loads if you do your air to match the load. I just use a bicycle pump to adjust. Easy to be accurate with each side. 405062

Took a few hours to get it completed, and went in as described. Have not had opportunity to test them out under load, but figure they would perform as expected. Instructions were not totally accurate, 4 bolts had changed size (to a smaller bolt than listed), but anyone with common sense could figure it out. (I did. LOL!) Wish "they" had included a "T" to inflate them equally, but purchased one at Lowes for about $6. I also "beefed up" the hose around sharp corners to protect them from getting damaged. 131693

Working great! Added an on-board compressor to the unit and use it to tow Travel Trailer. Does not get a LOT of use, but when it does, its great!

Quickly arrived and pretty easy to install. I filled to approx 20psi just as a daily driver but already can tell a big difference in the overall handling of the truck. The rear end feels stabilizes quickly when hitting bumps and the body rill is greatly reduced.I have yet to try them with a heavy load but I have no doubt they will perform great. 2008 GMC Sierra 1500. 517454

Still a great product a year later. I have pulled heavier trailers across the country, used it for my 30ft travel trailer. Alls i need to do is adjust the pressure to my desired settings and the truck rides smoothly down the highway nice and level. Highly recommended product. Product is holding up well.
