Video Transcript for Breaking Down the Hopkins 4-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number HM48205, this is the Hopkins four way flat trailer wiring kit. This kit's going to include, both your vehicle end connector, it's going to measure 48" long and your trailer end connector, that's going to measure 12" long. You're going to get new connectors at the back of your vehicle and on your trailer. These two will mate up perfectly together with another. That way you can send the signals from your vehicle back to your trailer. This is a four wire design, it's going to have the wire functions printed on directly on the wires for easy reference.

That way you can just look on the wiring and see which wire contorls what function. That's a nice feature to have. The plugs on them are going to feature corrosion resistant terminals so it's going to last a long time. One thing you can do to help prevent rust and corrosion to the terminals is that you can apply some dielectric grease to the terminals and that's going to help keep out corrosion. If you don't have some of that you can pick some of that up here at etrailer.com, it is sold separately but again that's going to help prevent corrosion. It's also going to include six quick splice connectors which makes connecting the wires very easy. Pretty simple installation, you want to choose an installation location at the rear of your vehicle.

Attach the car side on the female half to the same functions on the tow vehicle and then attach the trailer side color wires on the male half to the trailer and then you'll plug the mating parts together and check the lighting system for proper operations. That's going to be it for today's look at part number HM48205.

My 12 ft utility trailer needed a makeover, I stripped it down, installed new boards, repainted I and installed new wiring and lights. I ordered the wiring and lights from etrailer and they arrived in about a week and everything I ordered arrived in perfect shape. It installed very easily and worked perfectly when connected to my vehicle. Thanks etrailer for delivering on quality products and great service.

I decided this would be cheaper than any extension I could find, plus I'm going to shorten the wires anyways, so it's no big deal if it's in two parts already. I have a powered light adapter that's intended to be located outside, but I don't care for the idea of having that power wire running out to the hitch, so I'm going to use this kit as an extension so I can keep the adapter inside the car. My car has auxiliary wiring sockets to plug a trailer harness into, so I wont be using the included splices, but those look fairly decent. I would recommend packing those splice taps with grease, to keep water out if you use those sort of things. I usually don't

Ordered trailer hitch wiring connections, wires, mounts, etc. All arrived just as ordered, and within 5 days. The quality was top-shelf, which is why I continue to reorder from etrailer.....NO JUNK & NO MISTAKES, sounds simple but so many companies get it wrong

by:

I ordered LED tail lights and new light harness and a harness tester. Everything is working great.

by:

I have not installed the trailer wiring kit yet but wiring looks to be of a very high quality. Do note that the wiring for the trailer is 12 inches not 12 feet unlike me so your not placing another order with etrailer (boo hoo!!!)

Thanks for the great selection etrailer you are the first one I go to if I need anything that is not food, keep up the great work.

  • Do 4-Way Connectors Have a Power Wire
Trailer and vehicle 4-way connectors like you'll find with the 4-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit - Vehicle and Trailer Ends # HM48205 do not actually have a hot - or power - wire. As you can see by the cut out I added of the linked help article on trailer wiring (which I highly recommend checking out), a 4-way will activate running lights, brake lights and turn signals. I have added a link to our entire selection of trailer end 4-way connectors for you to take a look at.

  • Troubleshooting Right Turn Signal Causing Both Trailer Lights to Flash
It sounds like your right turn circuit is damaged somehow and is crossing over to the left turn circuit as well. What you'll need to do is check your tow vehicle wiring with a circuit tester so you know if the problem is on the tow vehicle or the trailer. If you turn on your right signal and then test the left turn circuit pin you can see if the signal is jumping over on your tow vehicle or not. If the problem is on your tow vehicle then you'll need to replace the 4-Way, but if it's on...

  • Recommended Trailer Wiring on 1994 Ford Ranger Pickup
To install the Hopkins 4-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Kit - Vehicle and Trailer Ends # HM48205 you will want to check for functions. Color matching doesn't always work, so I recommend using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test each function. I've attached an article to assist. If you choose not to hardwire your system, I recommend the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 40215 which is a fit for 1993 to 1997 Ford Rangers. This harness does...

  • How to Determine Functions of Different Colored Trailer Wires
The Hopkins 4-way connector, part # HM48205, uses white for ground, brown for the running lights, green for right side (passenger) turn signals and brake lights, and yellow for left side (driver) turn signals and brake lights. This is the standard wire coloring for trailer wiring, but just because it's standard doesn't make it law. To match the Hopkins up to your wires you're going to need to find out what each color does because there isn't anything to tell us. on the vehicle side you...

  • Wiring Small Trailer With 4-Way Connector To Match Towing Vehicle 4-Way Wiring
My best recommendation is to first make sure the brakes are not needed on the trailer. If you find that is the case you can cut off the 7-way connector on the trailer and just use the 4-way wiring for the turn, running, and brake lights on the trailer. If brakes were put on the trailer by the manufacturer there may be a requirement for the trailer. If the brakes were installed by the owner, then you may be right that they are not needed. I recommend using part # HM48205. This comes with...

  • Replacing Damaged Vehicle-Side 4-Pole Connector on Curt Wiring Harness
Yes, you can replace just the damaged connector on the 4-pole harness on your 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS. Hopkins part # HM48205 includes both vehicle- and trailer-side connectors (giving you a spare for the trailer) and quick-splice connectors. Similar products you might prefer include # C58044 that gives you a 60-inch length and # HM48030 which features an ergonomic-style plug. You will connect the white, brown, yellow and green wires color for color. I suggest wrapping the splices with...

  • How To Connect Can Am With 4-way Square Connector To Trailer With 5-way Connector W/ Separate Lights
Since your trailer has separate turn signals but your Can Am has a 4-way connector you will need to use a a converter like the Vehicle to Vehicle Tail Light Converter # 118158 on your trailer. You will need to use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to find the functions of your factory wiring and make the following connections: Red wire from converter to the brake light wire on the trailer Green wire on the converter to the passenger side turn signals on the trailer Yellow wire on the converter...

  • Adapter For Towing Trailer with Separate Turn Signals with Vehicle with Combined 4-Way
The trailer you have may already have a taillight converter installed on it so that the turn signals would be separated out. If you try to attach the 4-way of your tow vehicle to the 5-way do the lights work fine? Typically the 5-way is seen for reverse lights or a reverse lock out if the trailer has surge brakes. If not you would need the part # 118158 to separate out your combined vehicle wiring. You could cut off the 5-way of your trailer, wire this in place of it and then on the input...

  • Converting Wiring On 2008 Volkswagen Touareg To Tow Trailer With 3-Wire Lighting
Unfortunately we do not sell the modulate unit or the harness by itself. We receive these as a complete unit and individual parts are not made available to us. I do have a solution for you. You can use the # 118509 kit on your Touareg. This will give you a 4-way trailer connector. You can attach part # C56196 to convert the signal back to a 3-wire on the trailer. You will need to attach a 4-way to the converter for the trailer. I recommend part # HM48205. This includes both a trailer...

  • Can Trailer Wiring 4-Ways be Used to Power 12 Volt Lights
4-way connectors are designed to carry 12 volt power circuits. A lot of people use them to power LED light bars mounted below the tailgate so you could easily do what you are looking for. The white wire of the 4-way is typically the ground. The part # HM48205 comes with both 4-way connectors needed so it would work well.

  • Solution for Towing Rockwood Trailer with 4-Way Flat Connector
The connector of the # 30104 would be the same but the pin out is Jayco specific and would not match your trailer. Your best option is to cut off that connector on your trailer and install a 4-way flat like part # HM48205 so that your trailer can be towed by your tow vehicle and so that you can tow it with other vehicles easily as well.

  • Best Way To Connect
Hello Bill. I do have a solution for you, but the 4-pin round plug is not common, and we do not have an adapter for a 4-pin male to a 7-way female. What I would do it wire the flatbed tow truck with the more standard 4-flat plug like part # HM48205. This will allow you to use the adapter # 30717 which will allow you to plug in your 7-way trailer plug. Keep in mind that this will only operate the brake lights and turn signals and there will be no braking capability.
